Thanks to poster Doug.IE, great article on Vingo and Marciano http://classicboxingsociety.blogspot.ie/2015/02/blog-post_8.html Vingo had Marciano in serious trouble at one point
thanks. seriously, nobody looks at it....but i'm not bothered...it serves its purpose for me as an online place for me to store articles and such. some of the photos in some posts i made the schoolboy error of using links from my facebook page rather than upload them to the blog too.....facebook changes image links all the time seemingly.....so i must update some of those posts. anyway....a friend of mine was at that vingo fight....here he is talking about it... (posted this a few times here)... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4wSvphrwRE and yes....some amateur clips of the fight are on youtube.
good stuff, many will say Marciano would not be good today, too small, short reach etc. Vingo was a big boy and very tough, neither man was polished at that stage and while Vingo could punch was not seasoned as a finisher, Marciano had serious power. The big men were not successful in that era and Marciano was. I think we can only judge a fighter by fighting the very best in his era and Marciano did that fighting his number 1 contender 5 out of 6 times and retiring undefeated, a very hard task In his 49 fight career that he started late he fought in the window of his prime and retired at a perfect time when there was no one else to fight. Good stuff
in the first walcott fight marciano was listed as having a 67" reach (later fights listed as 68") 67" reach was the same as manny pacquaio...who was a world flyweight champion.
Marciano had Vingo down for a 9 count in the opening round with a left hook.A right hand from Vingo shook Marciano.Rocky did not land his right hand flush in the 2nd rd but another left hook floored Vingo again for a 9 count.A right hand fromVingo again staggered Marciano. Both slugged away in the 3,rdand 4th ,in 5th Vingo sent Marciano stumbling backwards a few steps with another big right, but didn't follow it up as he was too tired and battle worn.Marciano came back strong at the end of the round. The 6th saw Vingo shipping more punishment, a left hook dropped him heavily and he banged his head on the canvas , the referee counted to 3 then waved the fight off. Inetrestingly this wasn't the feature bout, the top of the bill was Nick Barone against **** Wagner.
You occasionally get the feeling that Vingo might have been something special, if history had taken a different course.
Goldman said of Vingo, " Vingo's young and tough and the kid can punch. But he fights flat-footed and stands up straight. If he don't make no changes he'll be all right for Rocky".
As posted before I saw that historic bout between the rising Bronx fighter Carmine Vingo and the smaller out of towner Rocky Marciano at MSG in 1949...I had seen Vingo before on our 12" tv set koing a guy, and Vingo could really bang...Yes j Carmine Vingo was highly touted as a possible champion in the future but fate intervened as Rocky Marciano entered the picture...
The fight really boosted Rocky's reputation in NY and set up his fight against LaStarza quite nicely.
I don't know much about Carmine Vingo. But at 20 years old, standing 6'4" and weighing only 189 lbs at that age and height, he probably looked like a new born fawn struggling to stand on all four legs. And while stats on paper hardly tell the whole story, stopping only 7 foes in 16 fights - 4 of whom had losing records, doesn't necessarily reflect colossal punching ability. Again I may be speaking from way out in left field as I don't know Jack about the guy, but I suspect that some of the appraisal he got as being a youth of boundless talent was probably damage control for some of the trouble he gave Rocky.
