i keep saying it....but its a shame we can't embed images in posts... http://i3.tinypic.com/2lo193m.jpg
Tragic ending and brutal 6th round aside, sounds like quite the impressive battle and showing for both men.
everything is always 20/20 in hindsight, but it really is a shame that Vingo's people didn't handle him more carefully. He was only 20 years old with 16 fights when they put him in with Marciano. Had they brought him up at a slower pace, gotten him some more experience against journeyman and gatekeeper and let his body fill out and mature a little, he might very well have developed into the hopeful they originally thought he'd become.
Dougie, this photo you posted is the image my dad and I saw of the terribly battered Carmine Vingo who is being attended by the great trainer Freddie Brown...Moments later they put him on a stretcher and rushed him to a hospital a block or two away. How Vingo survived this beating I'll never know, but thank God he did...
It is a miracle the man lived... I rarely see this much damage to a person... unless a car had hit them. Marciano ended so many up and comers, he destroyed men.
Ringo may have looked bigger than he was & he was average height, but you Google him his weight comes up prominently on the right as 218. i thought he was 217 for Frazier. Lighter? Maybe for one of their fights.
I have no idea when he weighed that much...maybe his final fight, but that is heavy for him. He was 200-207 prime. Here are his weights for alot of key fights over a 10 year period. 1964-08-21 : Tom McNeeley 203 lbs lost to Oscar Bonavena 201 lbs by TKO in round 5 of 8 1966-06-23 : George Chuvalo 215 lbs lost to Oscar Bonavena 203 lbs by MD in round 10 of 10 1966-09-21 : Joe Frazier 203½ lbs beat Oscar Bonavena 205 lbs by SD in round 10 of 10 1968-12-10 : Joe Frazier 203 lbs beat Oscar Bonavena 207 lbs by UD in round 15 of 15 1970-12-07 : Muhammad Ali 212 lbs beat Oscar Bonavena 204 lbs by TKO at 2:03 in round 15 of 15 1974-03-19 : Ron Lyle 216 lbs beat Oscar Bonavena 207 lbs by UD in round 12 of 12
My Uncles were Vingo fans, said he was an exciting fighter with heart and power, raw but so was Rocco at the time. I heard the fight was a war both men going at it. (Bert B was there so lets see what he thinks) Later they rooted for LaStarza the NY guy but they all thought Rocky won that one also with the KD and power shots. After that they always rooted for the guy from Brockton. Rocky was easy to beat from ringside seats but in the ring a different story
The biceps isn't the most important muscle mass for a power athlete small and sometimes isn't too important.
I wasnt making a statement on how effective his musculature was, Im just saying he had huge muscles. Muscle size doesnt necessarily denote strength. Ive seen plenty of guys who were naturally impressively built and werent that strong. However, Bonavena was very strong and very big.
