I don’t think there is much to criticize Vingo whom didn’t even have a ten round fight till that night. He was what he was. They were two promising prospects coming up at the time. It was the fight that propelled Marciano’s career sadly.
Thanks. Yeah, and the forum narrative that the sky was the limit for Vingo but for this fight seems to be in tension with some of the writeups I stumbled across for his other fights. None of it is conclusive but I thought it was pretty interesting. Brave fighter who deserves respect for his performance. It goes without saying but it’s a shame that his career was cut short so tragically.
The problem is that there's no way to build up the Muscato win into something that might have some bearing on head-to-head matchups. Muscato was a former middleweight/light-heavy who already had 20 losses, including 4 in a row, with the last being a knockout by Joe Walcott less than two months prior. No way to talk him up as some kind of physically-imposing big man who was much better than modern fans realize.
Muscato was on a losing streak and would only fight a couple of times more then retire, but he did have wins over. Oma x2 Savold x2 Maxim Barlund. There was no one on Vingo's sheet anywhere near that quality
