I've read a few times here that Carnera was trained by Abe Attell.Well I'd like to know how much time he spent training the giant, and for what fights?
So for those saying he was an Abe Attell trained fighter can you share your information with us, I'm sure we would all find it interesting ?

    Thanks in advance.

Still no takers here? I thought Janitor would respond he has several times said Attell honed and improved Carnera.

His involvement is detailed in "Primo Carner: The Life and Career of the Heavyweight Boxing Champion" by Joseph S Page.

I just tried to upload a picture of Carnera with Attell but it didn't seem to work.

In answer to your question, I think that Attelle's contribution was considerable.

If you look at Carnera in his earlier fights, he is decent technically, but he does not make good use of his reach.

He fights more like a Buddy Baer.

By the time he is fighting for the title, he is making good use of his size, controlling range well, and having a lot of success in nullifying his smaller opponents.

I think it is highly unlikely that Carnera would have held the heavyweight title, if these measures had not beeen taken to improve his style.

In which fights did Carnera make good use of his size and control range well?

Please make specific references to film sequences verifying your claims

I don’t see any of that at all on film

I would point you to the second Sharkey fight.

Study what he does in the second Sharkey fight, and then compare it to one of his earlier fights.

Ok and should the fact that Sharkey showed up in dreadful shape with a tire around his midsection and saggy tits play into factor?

    I’ll still look

Yes, it was a case of two factors combining, to cause an upset.

Carnera improved his game, and Sharkey had one of his little hiccups.

That fight is a tough call .. you do want to give Carnera credit for the fight of his life. He was more aggressive, effectively so. Sharkey was also not there .. the films are hard to conclude from .. while I used to completely go with the fix I just don't know. Sharkey was pretty much finished as a top fighter at the start of the thirties. After he fouled out against Schmeling in 1930, his best performance of that decade, he really dissipated .. the title win seems to have been a bad decision... really his only other notable win was over Primo .. it is conceivable that Primo slightly improved, Sharkey kept losing a step and Primo caught him with maybe one of the bet shots he ever landed on film.

I think Primo became a decent fighter and held his own based on stylistic match up .. he could use his size against an Uzcuden or a Loughran and maybe he did pull one off against an average punching, unmotivated Sharkey on the downslide .. as far as Attell's influence and timeline I'll look it up ..
