I just got finished watching this fight and can't help but recognize, in light of last night's 'Quit-fest', how much more heart the old guys had than some of the current fighters (Cotto is certainly excluded from this discussion). Carnera got knocked down 11 times and didn't quit. What's happened to the sport where quitting is acceptable? It's just depressing when fighters who you were a big fan of (Campbell, Guerrero) completely let you down.

Exactly quitting like that was totally unheard of in those days. Look at Wilard v Dempsey granted willard did finish on the stool but he was downed 7 times in the first round and was beaten again before he could straighten up he also had his jaw and nose broken in the 1st min and continued another 2 rounds before his cornor wouldnt allow him to get up and he probably would have continued if allowed.
Just compared that to sam peter vs VK who got hit with a few jabs and realised he wasnt going to win so he quit

The sport's guidelines should be in place to protect the fighters from themselves. Absolutely. But the fighters should be fighters. Witter looked like he was set to get dressed and go get a bite to eat after the "fight". What a joke compared to the old greats who left it ALL in the ring. Whatever you say about Margacheato, the guy could have stayed on his stool with Shane, and yet went out to take his medicine in the final round. He knew he was getting KTFO, but went out to fight anyway. That's heart.

Man, Willard has a huge heart. The guy was taking a beating and knew he was going to continue to take a beating but he still kept getting up.

See that's part of it too - modern boxing fans have become squeamish, even in just the 30 years I've been following the sport. In the old days, fans would be PISSED if a fight was stopped before its natural conclusion, now many of them whine if it is NOT stopped!:patsch

Say what you want about Carnera, but he had a fighter's heart the size of my house.

This whole 'quitting' thing seems to be a somewhat new phenomenon. I think fighters see other fighters quit and it has almost become acceptable. It is disgusting.

I was reading an article about Jake LaMotta recently and he said essentially and I am paraphrasing here:

"Back in my day you basically had to kill the other guy for a referee to stop a fight now as soon as someone gets a bloody nose or hit in the face the referee jumps in to end the fight"

and that is the damn truth too.

yeah. these guys are pussies. should fight 'till they go blind like calvin brock. should fight 'till they get killed. show a little heart. gotta die some way right. **** 'em. they are here for my entertainment. even ray robinson. everyone kisses his ass. he quit like a little ***** when fighting for the 175 .lbs title. what a sissy.

    these fighters nowadays.

    question: have i ever boxed?
answer: no, i'm not that dumb.

i have a college education, and a nice beer belly i've been working on for several years. i don't need to box. i have a real job.

Campbell has a right to be angry. That was a bad cut caused by an obvious head butt. The ref is an idiot or on the take?

You're not getting me here man - Campbell has a right to make whatever decision he wants, if he's willing to take the criticism. What I don't like are all the goddamn fans (or commentators) who whine for fights to be stopped too early when the fighters WANT to fight!!!:patsch
