Do you know if Carnera really did fracture his ankle against Baer? By the way that's a super cool story about Joe Louis. I saw a video a couple years ago interviewing Langford after his sight was restored, but I don't recall any mention of Louis.
I'm trying to think of advantages Carnera has over Bruno and am not coming up with many. He's a little taller, has a longer reach, has at least 25 pounds more of sold muscle (depending on when they fight) and is probably stronger, but Bruno hits way harder (oddly these two things can be quite different) and chin seems to be about equal. Carnera is faster and more fluid (yes I said it) but not by much, and he may or may not have more stamina (I'd say probably so, but again not by much). Bruno is pretty clearly a better technician. Bruno's performance against Lewis leads me to favor him, but then again another musclehead turned boxer named Jumbo Cummings, who had a very even fight with the ghost of Joe Frazier (It was about like Holmes-McCall) almost knocked out Bruno before being knocked out himself in the mid rounds (a lot like Briggs-Lewis). Still, I think I favor Bruno by about 2-1.
There is another photo of Primo in the hospital after the fight with a bandage around his ankle, but I couldn't find it I'm inclined to think he badly sprained it. Then again Carnera didn't fight again for 6 months which would have given an ankle break time to heal. This content is protected
We're going to keep discussing Primo until you vote in THE Primo poll, Russell. https://www.boxingforum24.com/threa...-primo-carnera-or-riddick-bowe.585492/page-86
I've seen it ,of course that doesn' t mean it was broken ,it could have been sprained.Either way it wouldn't have made any difference if he had 3 legs and 3 arms he wasn't going to win that fight, anytime Baer got serious ,he was going down . I read a fine description of this fight over 30 years ago,the writer said you can actually see Carnera being confronted with reality. In the ring with a big banger who isn't wearing handcuffs, the fight is a farce only redeemed by Carnera's courage.
