Someone actually wrote this comment on another thread! How did Carnera`s power rate out of 10?

There is no such thing as a feather fisted 250lb heavyweight.

He had a good punch I think. He can hurt you, but he was a level below the likes of Baer or Louis if that makes sense. He was not the feather fisted people like to claim, but at the same he was not some major hitter.

Wow Mark it happened about 10mins ago, who would’ve thought someone assumed a 250-270lbs Hulk hit hard!

Compared to a hard punching heavyweight though? Carnera didn`t have anything like Mike Tyson`s power.

I would agree, but that is besides the point.

IMO, Carnera certainly hit at least as hard as Buster Douglas did, and his uppercut led to his KO win over Mike Tyson (who probably had a better chin than Sharkey did).

Anybody that dedicates their time, attention, and effort to conditioning their body, then is taught by professionals how to throw punches, then practices landing those punches on other conditioned and educated individuals can hurt someone.

Carnera wasn't that powerful because of his mechanics, but when he connected he could hurt you with a single punch.

This. He generally punches like a slob, no snap, no twitch, not a natural puncher. Occasionally, he gets some power, almost by accident. Some guys that big (and bigger) just don't have the coordination to put it all together. Over the past decades, we've been seeing more guys but not a ton who combine giant size with the finesse necessary to throw good punches.

This is a very good post.
One thing that I would add. Carnera, I believe, was in his late teens, maybe 20, when he was introduced to boxing. By contrast, Vitali Klitschko was 13 or 14. I don't think that there is much doubt that starting early is the biggest factor in being a "natural" or in developing sport specific fast twitch muscles.
A good example of this is Mike "The Giant" White. By all accounts, an accomplished basketball player, he certainly was well coordinated, etc..
But he took to boxing later on and did not amount to much.

Tbh, I'd say Muhammad Ali hit much harder than Carnera. Compared to his size, his power was a joke.
