Carnera was 270 lbs professional athlete, he could kill a man accidentally with arm punch, WTF?

If he was as bad as Gallico said, then he wouldn't have lasted one round against Louis.

That fight was completely one-sided, all Carnera was doing was standing at long range throwing or feinting with his long jab, he hardly threw any other types of punches other than a few sluggish right hands, he missed all of his punches v Louis.

By what logic do you arrive at that sweeping statement?

Look at what the other top fighters of the day managed:

    King Levinsky 1 round
    Max Baer 4 rounds
    Paulino Uzcdun 4 rounds
    Charlie Retzlaff 1 round

Before he runs into Max Schmeling, Primo Carnera seems to be the only person to manage some sort of effective resistance.

Thankyou I have seen it many times.

My point is that he would have had to be a lot better than Gallico implied, even to survive for as long as he did.

    What are you talking about?

Peroni, Berkie and Brown all went past 6-rounds with Louis, that same year. In fact two of the aforementioned lost by decision.

Is this supposed to be the proof of anything?

Not sure id actually fancy getting clobbered by a Primo forearm! But as far as size and punching power /ability goes, he wasn't a absolute knock em flat type, for his size that is.

It might have been within the same year, but it was still within six months of Louis's pro debut, and before his handlers considered him to be ready for the top tier of contenders.

I don't think that you can simply overlook the fact that Carnera lasted longer than two of the most durable contenders in the division in Baer and Uzcdun.

Remember that Gallico was claiming that Carnera's sparring partners had to hold back to avoid knocking him out.

That obviously has the smell of BS about it, given his performances against the top fighters of the division.

I do not know what this^ is supposed to support. What was still within six months of Louis' pro debut?

You stated that Carnera seemed to be the first of Louis' opponents to manage some sort of effective resistance. That is clearly not the case.

I can, because the round in which a fight finishes is not an accurate measure of how good the loser is.

Carnera didn't win a round or even land one significant punch, throughout the bout with Louis. He was just there - game - as always.

Leading up to the Carnera bout, Louis had predicted a fifth-round KO (Carnera had predicted he would do the same to Joe in round-6) and, I suspect, Louis was simply biding his time.

That Carnera was a big awkward lump, doesn't speak to his skill set. He had a [ripe for the counter] jab, was surprisingly nimble on his feet and had a great deal of heart - which was a good job, because his defense was weak and, once Louis decided to get the job done, it got done.

It was an easy night's work.

Not that the above is relevant, but I don't find it that hard to believe when even Loughran, not even known for his power at 175 and weighing in more than 80lbs lighter than Carnera, managed to stun him, mid-fight?

I compared Carnera's performance against Louis, to those of the other champions and contenders, rather than the fringe contenders that he fought on the way up.

It might be worth noting that Brown was renowned for his durability. He was dropped in the first round, and it had been his first time on the canvas according to some sources.

Besides, if we take what Gallico is claiming to it's logical conclusion, he is clearly implying that Carnera would have needed help to beat men like Brown and Peroni.
If Carnera was lasting longer than the most durable contenders in the division, then you have to conclude that either he had some sort of punch resistance, or some sort of defense.

It is certainly incompatible with him being the helpless stumblebum depicted by Gallico.

For the record Blackburn told the press that Louis would finish Carnera inside four rounds.
A fighter like Loughran can buzz anybody if they catch them with a punch that they don't see coming.

I wouldn't take that to mean anything.

Effective resistance? He hardly landed a punch.

He had a long lead, stayed at distance and just kept poking it out missing.

His flying forearms would have been more powerful than his punches as he was really just a wrestler.

So why couldn't the other top contenders of the day just do that?
