I've allways assumed that Smith may have been robbed by pedantic refereeing in this fight, by Corri rigidly sticking to the letter of the boxing law. This account gives a different slant on it ,stating that the 20 year old ,170lbs ,Frenchman was in front by superior boxing, though the hard hitting Smith was always dangerous.
Carpentier had Smith down for a count of seven before the dsq stoppage.

Carpentier seems to have made a meal of the low punch , a blow that was almost certainly unintentional , but that is no novelty in boxing.
