I've just now noticed that instead of a canvas, our ring has carpet in it. I didn't notice until I was sparring and noticed that I couldn't move as well, then my trainer told me it's to work your footwork so you'd smoother on a canvas.

Is this a common thing to do?

I think that is a bad idea. If you are always sparring on carpet, it's simply going to feel weird when you get in a real ring. You want to be comfortable fighting in an actual ring, not in someone's living room.

I suppose you're right. But then again, it's like wearing a weight vest to run, makes it harder to run so when it's off running is a breeze. So if you're sparring on carpet which is like damn quick sand lol, then a canvas would be so much easier

Huh. Sounds like training for tennis in a backlot full of weeds and broken-up concrete, so that playing on grass or clay courts will be easier.

i've never heard of this ,but it sounds like a brilliant idea to me.:good:good
when the bell went in my first fight the first thing i noticed was how soft the canvas was compared to the boards in our club.
all thoughts of dancing round like ali quickly went (1978) and i plodded round.

It all changed in 67, with the 1st Rubber soled Boxing boot. Technique changed from Shuffle to step, in the old days they used a Resin Tray now long gone. Now with Rubber it doesnt matter, also carpet lasts longer lol

It's a form of resistance training, and effective.
