or lose his WBO mandatory status

    -----------------------------------

According to Terry Trekas of One Punch Productions, co-promoter for WBO/WBA/IBF lightweight champion Nate Campbell, the WBO has given interim-champion Joel Casamayor until April 4 to decide whether or not he will fight Campbell.

Based on Casamayor's recent statements about not being interested in a bout with Campbell, it's unlikely the fight will happen. Juan Diaz, recently signed by Golden Boy Promotions, who also promote Casamayor, is said to be a possible opponent for Casamayor in the near future.

Casamayor holds a 2003 decision win over Campbell and is using that win to justify his decision to seek out another opponent. He wants to face the likes of Manny Pacquiao or Marco Antonio Barrera. The chances of landing either is very slim.

Should Casamayor turn down the chance to fight Campbell, the WBO, according to their guidelines, would strip him of the interim-title and elect Anthony Peterson as the mandatory challenger.

    -------------------------------------------
Here we go again, Casamayor refusing the best fight there is for him right in his face. Still didnt learn anything about why he got stripped of his WBC title with the Freitas/D.Diaz/J.Diaz fiasco. Gonna be alot of anxiety these next few days, i really hope it does happen, Campbell deserves the shot at the ring title.

Campbell vs Peterson could be interesting, although Peterson probably ain't ready just yet.

Casa has to fight Campbell. He said he was not interested, but he has no choice.

Casa will take whatever fight offers the biggest payday for him. If it's Campbell, he'll probably take that fight, but it won't be because he is worried about losing his WBO mandatory status.

Amir Khan is supposedly fighting a WBO eliminator with Martin Kristjansen this saturday in Bolton, England, So how can the WBO make Anthony Peterson their mandatory contender, if Casamayor decides not to fight Nate Campbell?:?

<-----My boy Peterson is sooooo ready. His defense is solid. He throws quick and in combination and he sits down on his punches. Campbell is good but Peterson is excellent.

casa will fight campbell only if he gets a good payday. otherwise, he'll try to scout a few other prospects that can give him a bigger paycheck. casa knows he's not getting any younger and he can't afford to wait longer. time's tickin..

What the hell? It doesn't make sense... if you are the mandatory (as no1 challenger or interim champ), it's the CHAMP who has to decide whether he fights his mandatory or he gives up the title...

Isn't it Campbell who should sign or will be stripped? The whole situation is a joke anyway... remember that Casamayor was the WBC 'full' champ, David Diaz was the interim. Now somehow WBC stripped Joel, gave the title to Diaz (so the Morales fight could be a full and legal world title fight) but after Casamayor threatened to sue Cosa Nostra Sulaiman, they put him back - into interim status! :patsch

What happened to Casamayor's WBC interim belt anyway?

He is like 100 years old and only just got out of his last 2 fights with wins. I dont blame him for wanting to chase the big cash fights.

Campbell would pip him this time, he nearly did in the first fight.

The Nate fight is still a good option, just no where as juicy as Pac.

He lost it for taking on Katsidis. The WBC wanted him to rematch Santa Cruz after the dodgy result.

but he should fight him. it will be a unification fight and im pretty sure hbo will cement it so they will get a pretty good pay day

I can't believe the idiots in this thread who support Casa outright ducking the number 1 contender in his division to fight a smaller guy.

You all are the reason why boxing is messed up, yet I bet 99% of you all hate Floyd because he won't fight Cotto.

    Hypocrites.
