Has anyone mentioned Jerry Quarry? Pugilistic dementia to the point that he couldn't tie his own shoes in his later days. Mike Quarry, same thing.

I believe Bobby Chacon also has had mental troubles. At one point he went missing for a week or more and turned up in Arizona with no memory of how he got there, IIRC.

I met Chuvalo when I was 12 but I didn't really understand what he had gone through. I'll dig up the polaroid.

Mickey Walker was picked up on the streets and the cops thought he was just some drunk dude but really he was suffering from effects in the boxing ring, mainly dementia.

I think all walks of life - and life in general - have an effect of people's mental health.
Lots of people succumb to mental illness.

Getting punched in the head can't help though.

I think that when discussing the question of mental illness among former fighters, the subject of dementia should be excluded in order to bring more clarity to the issue. It is common knowledge that there were a huge number of former fighters who had some form of dementia, but what I want to know is if there were fighters who suffered from depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia or some other type of mental illness besides a form of dementia.

Dementia is just one possible result of repeated head trauma. A lot of psychiatric issues can pop up on the spectrum as a result. Depression goes hand in hand with head trauma. Pituitary atrophy can cause hormonal changes that affect a person mentally and behaviorally. Impulsive behavior can result from frontal lobe damage. Parkinson's has a psychological affect too. Sometimes it's difficult to sort out what is and isn't influenced by damage in the ring.
