ive always thought Ali won that fight. The more i try to be objective concerning close rounds and ****, the more i see Ali still winning 6-3-1 even
As close as it was,on points,I can't fail to score it in Ali's favour,no matter how many times that I watch it. Part of the controversy involving the result,is imo, based on the expectation levels at the time. The young Cassius was expected to blow Jones away.
Ali - Jones "rematch", October 27, 1966: http://news.google.com/newspapers?i...BAJ&dq=cassius clay doug jones&pg=4728,257033
Thanks! Very interesting. Jones had faded by then, though. Too bad, I'd loved to see a rematch between a more mature Clay and a still sharp Jones. But Jones faded too fast for that to happen. But I think this is a pointer as to what would have happened.
I scored it 5-4-1. ali grew up in this fight. he needed to win the last round to seal it on my card. ali always needed to avoid punches to get his off but jones kept landing on the way in. jones could reach him. a tough crowd, looked like they pelted the ring after the fight.
This fight reminded me a little of Ralph Tiger Jones against Robby in that both Ralph and Doug knew how to fight against these two styles. Doug had no problem catching Ali with that short right hand coming in all night just like Ralph knew how to belt in his left hook behind Robinsons missing right leads. Like Choklab I had it 5-4-1 also.
