Rumors are flying around, that Cassius Clay will fight George Chuvalo instead of Argentinian Eduardo Corletti. Corletti, the muscular powerhouse recently battered George Chuvalo, enroute to wiining a one-sided 10-Round Decision. But the Champion, is choosing to fight the 'burly' Canadian instead of the more skillful Argentinian Heavyweight. El Grafico', wants to know the reason for this travesty of boxing protocol. You lose, and get to challenge for a World Championship. Mr. Corletti wants to ask Mr. Clay 'Que pasa' This content is protected
What was the status of Clay's boxing license at this time....fighting "out of the country" to avoid Military Induction was always part of his Mgmt's considerations for fight selections.
Well, he fought Chuvalo in Canada, the same year he fought London and Cooper in England and Mildenberger in Germany. Now, I don't know Corletti and I'm some of you might call an Ali hater, but even for me this seems exaggerated. Other than the fact Corletti won a 10 rounds decision over Chuvalo, there was no need for Clay to defend his title against the Argentinian guy. Not saying Chuvalo was a better choice, but I don't believe Corletti deserved a title shot at that time. Anyway, Senor Pepe, I gotta say I love your threads. Keep 'em coming! :thumbsup
I concur:good. How could i have been so blind??? Hes gotta be top 60 max, sandwiched between Abe Simon and Joe Roman
February 1966 The powerful 5' 10" - 190 lb. - Eduardo 'El Gato' Corletti after 'sweeping the floor' with George Chuvalo. The 24 year-old Argentinian now at 12-2-5 (9 KO's) looks to have the 'non-stop' style to pressure the Champion - Cassius Clay. Young, strong and durable, with a non-stop attack that resembles the great Henry Armstrong. Following "El Gato's" impressive win over the 'tough' Canadian George Chuvalo, it might be wise for the 'dashing' Mr. Clay to avoid the Argentinian for now.
Ali took on the tougher test. Corletti/Chavalo was 'judged' by Harry Gibbs, and that is all you need to know, eh Sir 'enry?
Once again Pepe it was a money issue, as you well know. Ali would have gotten nothing to face Corletti who prior to fighting Chuvalo had won two fights out of his previous eight, he got $90,000 to face Chuvalo. Everytime a fighter fights you can cherry pick guys who were equally worthy of getting that fight. It doesnt mean they were avoided.
George Chuvalo 'picked' as 'easy pickings'. Boxing pundits want to know how and why,,,,,,,, No one can question George Chuvalo's 'toughness', but the 28 year-old face-first Canadian carries with him a 34-10-2 (27 KO's) record. George who was 'chunky' on January 25, 1966 - when he was beaten decisively by Eduardo Corletti, is now 10 lbs. heavier for his bout with Cassius Clay, set for March 29, 1966. A bit of helpful information for George, heavier and slower won't work against the 'fleet-footed' Cassius Clay. The 'quick-fisted' 24 year-old Corletti would be a much better opponent, as he is younger, faster, has a better defense, and clearly more overall skills. Eduardo defeated the Canadian Champion from Toronto at The Olympic Hall in the United Kingdom. They don't come any stronger than Corletti, who has also knocked out 'The Golden Boy' Billy Walker. In his bout with George Chuvalo, Eduardo was much faster and showed the better ability. He kept out of harms way by dancing away from the 'burly' Chuvalo. The Olympic Hall crowd was pleased with the Decision. Chuvalo was only able to land his hard punches in the 10th Round, when he rocked the Argentinian 'twice'. This content is protected
The Associated Press. January 25, 1966 - Eduardo Corletti over George Chuvalo - by a score of 6-2-2 in Rounds. The Argentinian Heavyweight 'El Gato' is now living in Rome. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A little over 1-year later, in May 1967, 25 year-old, Eduardo Corletti goes to 19-2-5, with a 'one-sided' 10-Round Decision over 'highly-regarded' South African Heavyweight Champion, 29 year-old - Gerry de Bruyn who carried an 18-5-1 (13 KO's) record into the Heavyweight bout held at Kings Hall in the United Kingdom. The 200 lb. 'El Gato' was a smooth cat, as he impressed the Kings Hall crowd with boxing brilliance never seen before in a Heavyweight, with fast hands and quick footwork, pitching a near shut-out over the hard-punching 196 lb. South African. The Associated Press scored the bout 8-0-2 in Rounds. This content is protected
Gerry De Bruyn, the same guy that Buster Mathis annhilated in 35 seconds. You know, the same Buster Mathis that Ali dominated and embarrassed. The same Mathis that dominated and embarrassed Chuvalo. The same Mathis who dominated your hero Amos Lincoln. Who else did Ali duck, Im sure we will hear all about it
