Then why did only 9000 British fans attend this widely recognized
    World Heavyweight Championship bout.

    "Time Magazine"

'Cassius Clay is scraping the bottom of the barrel.'

"The American Champion has left his country to fight an unqualified
challenger, and now other American Heavyweights have to come over
here to chase him down. Cassius is so fast, that the other American's
are having a hard time catching him, as he moves from city to city
like a swift cat in a cape.'

It was only the speed of Ali's punches that was keeping London up as long as he was !

You want to do a similar piece on Ron Stander? The only thing I know about him is that he lost to Cleveland Williams in 1973, right after fighting Frazier for the undisputed HW title.

    Bokaj,

    Get your Heavyweight names together.

Ron Stander 'never' fought Cleveland Williams.

Now Ron Stander was 27 years-old when he fought Joe Frazier for the World Heavyweight Championship,
so he was considered 'a live opponent'.

Sporting a record of 23-1-1 (15 KO's), Ron had the 'proud' distinction of never having suffered a 'knockdown'.

He was the Nebraska Heavyweight Champion, ranked as having the 38th largest population in the
    United States.

Though I would have to agree, even positioning him in the Top 25 would have been quite a stretch.

    But Ron Stander did have some 'cool' nicknames;

    'The Council Bluffs Butcher'
    'The Mid-West Whacker'
    'Iron-Chin of the Cornfields'
    'The Cornhusker Clouter'
    'The Hay Bale Blaster'
    "Johnny Farmboy'
    'Nebraska Sideburns'

Sorry, it was Frazier's other succesful defence of his undisputed title - Terry Daniels. Can't really keep them apart.;)

Still gives me a right giggle, though. The one many consider Ali's worst challenger during his first reign beat one of Joe's challengers seven years later.

And Frazier's other succesful defense was apparently the Nebraska HW champion.

Very much look forward to you break-down of Stander, Daniels and why not Jose Roman while you're at it. Than comes the almighty scrutiny of Holmes' challengers. Definitely something to look forward to. Perhaps Holmes also had some lurking shadow like Spencer that he never faced?:yep

    Bokaj,

I did a small thread on Jose 'King' Roman.

    Pretty good I might add.

Terry Daniels, his family had alot of money too, he might be worth doing
    a thread on.

Not sure who Larry really avoided, that he never fought. Maybe Gerrie Coetzee
or Greg Page would come to mind, followed by Michael Dokes.

    I got it, Richard Dunn.

So Ali was running away to London to duck exactly who from back home?
The great Sugar Ray Robinson had two tours of Europe fighting guys like the Champion of Belgium, who was he running from?

    Wrong decade fella,

I only stick with the 1960's.

Of course being from the United Kingdom, you wouldn't understand the
general feeling here in the United States during that period.

The people of Watts and Oakland, California (the real street people) knew
Amos Lincoln would do a number on Cassius Clay if they ever got in the ring,
that is why he never fought him.

And the citizens of San Francisco were willing to bet the Golden Gate
    Bridge on Thad Spencer.

And Mr. Clay, if he had defeated Thad Spencer was going to call the bridge
    'The Cassius Crossing'.

    That is a fact...:deal

Yeah...He should have earned the title shot, then, huh?

    Either one of them.

Poor Lincoln would've been seeing double.

Thad Spencer did earn a title shot, by defeating Doug Jones in October 1966.

Cassius Clay said he would fight the winner.........:deal

Why don't you do those threads ?

Senor Pepe seems to concentrate on the 1960s, Ali and Liston and the contenders of that era at HW - and he's done some great threads on obscure lower-weight division titlists too, from the 1970s.

I noticed he gets a lot of hate from the big "Ali fans" on this board but I never see any interesting or new and informative Muhammad Ali threads coming from the Ali fans themselves.
