This video has been up for a year, and probably has been mentioned here before, but I just saw it for the first time.

Anyone who HASN'T seen it, just go there NOW.

Holy smokes, it's not just Clay that's looks great. (This announcer is more of a nuthugger than Jim Lampley)
Clay dominated most of round 3, but for the first 2 rounds, Zbigniew Pietrzykowsky was almost his equal here.
    What an amazing tactical battle!

    .

It's also interesting to me that Clay was a LHW in the Olympics. I hadn't known that.

shame Poland didn't have pro boxing back then, in the 60's and 70's we had many talented fighters like Kulej and Pietrzykowski who did very well in the Olimpics, but never had a chance to fight in the pros

    You're welcome.

    - and a bump for those who still haven't seen it.

The Polish team must have had a very good trainer.

    yeah, Feliks Stamm's school

he had the Polish team 7 times at times at the Olympic games from 1936 to 1968, his boxers won a total of 24 Olympic medals from 48' to 68', the best boxing trainer in the history of Poland

There is a boxing memorial named after him. Now with amateur boxing in decline it is almost forgotten, but in the past it was different and you could find future top fighters amongst participants (Lennox Lewis, Ibragimov, Golota).

    Overrated? Aw, c'mon.

I think that Pietrzykowsky was simply so good, (and also a southpaw) that Clay was being cautious. He didn't want to fully commit & get countered, (which was happening) so he threw a little wild from the outside.

No robbery, Clay obviously won, but those first two rounds should be posted as a sticky somewhere!

    Great video, thanks.

How were amateur fights scored in those days? If it were a pro fight I would have given it to the Pole. Not sure what score I would have under modern Am scoring, but Zig landed all the best shots for the first two rounds and Ali only clearly won the last half of round 3.

The commentary was hilarious, it makes some of the modern day but hugging commentators seen truly impartial!

I watched it again and imo Ziggy won it. Apart from the third all I see from Clay is hitting a lot of air.

And yes the commentary was ****.

I think you guys might actually be right.

The problem is that with the quality of this footage, it's hard to whether or not some of Clay's shots were landing. Clearly, if they did land they weren't very effective, but that's what (theoretically) separates amateur scoring from pro scoring: Effective aggression / strength of the punches isn't supposed to matter much. It's more about amassing points.

Maybe I'll watch it a third time, with the audio off & in slo-mo. My guess is that if one does this, the obvious conclusion will be that Marquez won!
