That's different than saying he's overrated. It's hard to overrate a boxer who beat four Olympic Gold Medalists*, six members of the International Boxing Hall Of Fame, virtually cleaned out his division in two different decades, and beat two consensus top ten all time great heavyweights and one bubble top ten heavyweight.

    * The fact he beat a 1956 Olympic Gold Medalist and a 1976 Olympic Gold Medalist epitomizes the remarkable arc of his storied career.

You dont think calling someone the greatest of all time is being overrated? Before you respond you dont have to mention his accomplishments again..I read all that in your last 3 post.

Michael Jordan is called the greatest basketball player of all time, Tiger Woods is called the greatest golfer of all time, Tom Brady is called the greatest football player of all time, Babe Ruth is called the greatest baseball player of all time, et cetera. Are they overrated? I would say no. I would say greatness is subjective and heavily dependent on the criteria one uses.

    Because it's subjective.

My point from my original post was what Ali did inside the ring and outside the ring are intertwined and when you ask someone why he is the goat it sometimes is because of what he accomplished as a boxer but sometimes its what he did as an activist.

When you search the goat of boxing it says Ali but doesent go into great detail of what he did inside the ring like you did. Instead it says more of what he did outside the ring and how he stirred everything up and I disagree with him being called the goat for what he did outside the ring.

That's why I said greatness is subjective. Michael Jordan is considered the GOAT though there are other basketball players who have impressive resumes. The difference is Michael became a global icon.

But when people talk about MJ its all about what he did on the court. When people talk about Ali its usually how he ditched his Christian name for a Muslim name or how he dodged the war and became an activist. This is my point

He resisted the draft and was willing to go to prison if the government rejected his claim he was a conscientious objector. Dodging the draft suggests he hid or used subterfuge to avoid serving. Boxing historians look at his work in the ring and there is a consensus he's one of two greatest heavyweights ever to lace em up. As to his caeeer it's impossible to discuss his career without noting his out of the ring exploits, especially when they robbed him of his prime which makes what he accomplished when he was no longer in it all the more remarkable.

In other words MJ being considered the GOAT is strictly based off him as a basketball player as to where Ali's greatness is measured off of him as an activist to a certain extent.

Calling him the greatest boxer limits him. He is the subject of more books, movies, and documentaries than any other athlete in history. Apropos of nothing when I drive around L A and see boxing supplies stores there's images of Muhammad Ali on the signs and most of the people who frequent those stores weren't even born yet when Ali was fighting.

Boxing historians are just a handfull of people. Im speaking about the popular opinion across the planet where atleast half of these people know slim to nothing about his boxing career but believe he is the greatest because he stood for something or stood against the government. My point is if you take away him as an activist then his popularity gets cut in half.
