Greatness is subjective but there are rough consensuses in every sport over who and who doesn't belong in the conversation and it changes over time.

 

I disagree. Greatness is unquestionable and undenied not subjective. Ali is an ATG who makes the top 3 and in some cases top 5. This is called being objective.

 

If GOAT status is objective why is there so much debate over who is the GOAT in different sports? We can't debate that a pitching mound is 60 feet, 6 inches from home plate because it is but we can debate whether Hank Aaron or Babe Ruth is the GOAT baseball player.

You keep setting yourself up.. That's not why Floyd JR. makes the conversation..15 world titles , Lineal championships in 4 different weight divisions. Imo Floyd lost to Castillo 1 but swiftly redeemed himself in an undenied performance in their second fight.

 

I'm trying to distill your argument. You seems to be arguing that you're a "boxing purist" and that your opinion of who the greatest boxers are and the order in which they rank are valid and the opinions of others who hold themselves out as "boxing purists" are invalid.

Teddy Roosevelt is considered one of America's greatest presidents and 600,000 Filipinos were killed in the Philippine- American Conflict during his administration. Empire building is dirty business. Our friend also said Muhammad Ali was wrong to resist serving in the Vietnam War which many thought was criminal and where over 3,000,000 Vietnamese civilians and military were killed. Again, empire building is not for the faint of heart. These are tough choices. My pops grew up in Mobile, Alabama in the Jim Crow south so he saw some pain. He joined Uncle Sam's army at the ripe old age of 17 in 1951 and served twenty years in the military and another twenty years in the civilian military and was awarded a Bronze Star for his service in Korea and another for his service in Vietnam. I have four siblings who served, all of whom were officers. They made their choices and Muhammad made his and to a one they all respected his choice.

That's not having guts that's being a Coward to every extent. If Ali was true to what he was standing for then why didn't Ali stick up for the thousands of Americans that were sent to prison for refusing to be drafted. They got to rot in jail. Ali was out for his own skin and ended up being the poster boy against the draft because of his platform as a professional athlete.
