Lol why do ppl act like Muslims changing their name is uncommon? Thank you @ThatOne for schooling folks. My thing is, everyone is entitled to their opinions but when someone such as Ali has so much info on him, maybe look at it b4 making ill advised takes? Or don't pay him no mind?

Not saying he was a saint but unless he personally hurt u, let it go some of y'all r so bitter towards him the man has been dead for years and suffered Parkinsons many years b4 he passed.

I'll probably catch the doc but I have a few books to knock out first pun intended. Peace y'all have a good one.

The documentary was extremely well done. I learned that Ali had proposed to the singer Dee Dee Sharp but she couldn't marry him because he was a Muslim and her father was a Christian minister and forbade it.

No but thx for the recommendation. Last Ali related doc I've seen is Blood Brothers and around that time Godfather of Harlems Ali too. May get the BB book too but I'm working my way down the decades starting from Jack Johnson so it'll b a while haha. I do have Ali n Liston as well as King of The World.

I read King of The World by David Remnick and Blood Brothers. Godfather of Harlem was great. I'm sad it's over. The Chin was an amateur boxer in real life. I'm generally not a fan of the NOI but they were a counterforce to mob influence in boxing. Even the mob that didn't want that smoke.

I needa catch up on GOH. I'm currently reading Autobiography of Malcolm X and in general I feel NOI was very underappreciative of him. It is very unhealthy to see a person as a deity like they did Elijah as that did end up costing Malcolm his life when he rightfully criticized him. It is a cult when an organization functions like that btw I am team Malcolm.

Religion in general is too misogynistic n regressive to me but I am appreciative of 5%s, off shoot of NOI, touch on Hip Hop. Clarence 13x, the founder, was a student of Malcolm X too. My criticisms aside of even them, mainstream rap was more thought provoking when they had more presence. Rakim the standout. Sorry if this paragraph is a bit off topic lol.

I read the Autobiography of Malcolm X when I was in high school .
The NOI is a cult but it wasn't created in a vacuum and it's important to understand the position that Black folks in America found themselves in that gave it its rise. Once you understand that you understand Muhammad Ali except the crucial difference is Ali loved just about everybody and wanted folks to love him

I understand why Ali n Shabazz joined my problem is with NOI believing ppl like Elijah or Farrakhan r more than human. That is fanatical behavior which ends up harming more than helping. Even w my disagreements w religion, I also understand ppl wanting to have a community hence even us joining a forum.

Jim Crow, slavery, lynchings, institutional anti blackness, attempted genocide, etc I get all of that which leads to blk ppl having groups n organizations to combat that. I believe in more secular ones such as Malcolm's AAO despite him being religious but thats just my preference.

I have Peter Goldmans book on Malcolm along w On the Side of my ppl by DeCaro both I'm gonna read. I'm curious how I'll feel about those compared to the Autobiography but Goldman is arguably the best scholar on Malcolm still alive so my hopes r high. Like Haley, he too had several conversations w Malcolm.
