Well where really would I hear "casuals" talking about this fight or boxing outside of Mayweather or Pacquiao? I do have a couple friends that don't follow boxing at all, ask me when Golovkin's next fight is every so often. And I remember at a restaurant, I overheard a table talking about Golovkin. But my point was more so that because of Golovkin's media exposure, whether it be newspapers, ESPN, or him attending major events i.e. Emmy's (where he thus has his picture taken with the likes of Gyllenhaal and others) it wouldn't be hard for a "casual" to come across him and thus become curious about the guy.

He's been on ESPN a number of times already, in the studio. Aside from Manny and Floyd, that isn't something you see too often. For a non-American who didn't come over until 2013 and whose English is limited (although much better now), that speaks for itself. Hell, he has already secured his first headline PPV while a more talented and accomplished American is fighting on an undercard after performing on BET to a TV audience of 300K...

Resume aside, GGG has become far more of a "face" for boxing than any other active fighter not named Manny Pacquiao. If GGG can get past Lemieux then 2016 is the year that makes or breaks him as far as a standout star. He has to keep winning in dominant and exciting fashion, but also increase his level of competition. Cotto/Canelo winner, then Lee/BJS, then (hopefully) Ward to close out the year would be ideal, but boxing rarely plays out like that.

Point made. In the small town I live in, you don't hear his name mentioned at all. I really haven't seen that exposure of him on ESPN either but I don't watch that channel that much. I just don't think that Golovkin is as mainstream as some are trying to make him out to be. Kovalev will probably become more popular because at least he has somewhat of a sinister quality about him.I will be surprised if this fight does 250K.

Fair enough. In reality though, if it does 250K, that's actually pretty good for a pretty unknown commodity, considering what Cotto and Canelo's last PPV's were. Should be interesting to see who the next big stars are going to be these next couple years.

I guess that's my point, that Golovkin is, at this point in time, still a pretty unknown commodity. I just don't see him being the next "face of boxing" but, to be truthful, I didn't see Mayweather and Pac becoming as popular as they did so who knows.

You're right when you say that GGG isn't mainstream. He's on the verge of being mainstream, but he's not there yet. A fantastic KO win over Canelo will sky-rocket him there. GGG will be all that's talked about after that happens.

Kovalev has a long way to go. I don't think he'll ever get there, but maybe one day. I blame his promotion.

Brock lesnar was the biggest star they've had to date. Rousey is second but McGregor is also becoming quite the draw in the sport.
