Paret taking on Fullmer at middle prior to the fatal fight against Griffith. Dave Charnley being thrown in against Griffith at welter by Arthur Boggis. Lora hanging around at bantam before and especially after the Perez fight, he more or less ended his own career. JMM-John was a good shout. Alfonso Lopez fought some opponents with shocking timing, post-Espadas. Big hitters like Ursua and Avelar and beasts like Chang and Gushiken after his chin had been exposed and wrecked by Espadas. Kalule staying at 154 after the Leonard fight, he was killing himself making the weight and then took on Moore and McCallum back to back and got what was left of his prime beaten out of him.
Mayweather not taking the PAC fight when they were in their respective primes. Hurt both fighters legacies. IMO it would be hard not to put Mayweather in the top 3 p4p spot with a win over PAC in his prime. I still put him there but understand why others don’t.
Although I do wonder how good he would truly have been at 154 even at that stage either. He looked less powerful and less able to exert himself physically with Green or Baez as he had at 147 with others around that time. Green fight hard to say of course as it ended before it really got started.
Amir Khan overestimating his own worth by holding out for big money fights against Pacquiao and Mayweather and wasting the rest of his prime.
True, but the thing is The Honeyghan beating wouldn't have happened. He likely would have gotten a 154 lb title shot without the physical and mental toll the Honeyghan loss placed on him. I am not saying he would have beaten McCallum, though.
MMH fighting orthodox for the start of the fight with Leonard. Barney Eastwood taking Steve Cruz as a late replacement and agreeing to let Barry McGuigan fight in the daytime heat.
most upsets. Curry fighting McCallum. It sort of led to him declining even more than the Honeyghan declined him.
i dont think that anything comes close to the decision of Marty Servo to fight Rocky Graziano. Marty Servo was the World Welterweight Champion whose only losses were to a prime version of probably the greatest welterweight and possibly fighter of all time, Sugar Ray Robinson. Both were razor close decisions. One was a split decision and (from memory) they other was one where the referee (third judge if judges were split) actually ruled in his favour and the decision was actually booed by fans. Either way, both very close fights, maybe prime Robinson's toughest fights. He should have been an undisputed all time great. Instead, he decided to fight a hard hitting middleweight in Rocky Graziano and was Knocked out and had his career virtually finished due to the injuries he suffered. And his legacy completely shattered.
This is the first thing that popped into my mind but it wasn’t catastrophic to JMM. Obviously he’d go on to have a pretty damn good career.
