Catch weight fights. It DOES matter if you're forced to lose one or two pounds

Specifically speaking about the Manny-Cotto bout. People say that Cotto losing only two pounds is no biggie. But I've read somewhere saying that a well fit boxer that's in shape and barely any body fat, can suffer weakness since they have to give up muscle since they have no body fat. If this is the case, then it was a smart move to make Cotto come down to 145. What do you guys think?

obviously Cotto going down an extra 2 pounds is a disadvantage for him, just like Manny going up 5 pounds is a disadvantage for him.

the point of a catchweight is that both fighters are at their best in different divisions, so they try to find a middle ground so they can fight on a level playing field.

Agreed...However that definition doesn't apply to the Cotto-Pac fight as Pac had already fought and won a fight at 147lbs and has subsequently fought at 147 lbs also winning. Pac would also not be asking Mayweather for a catchweight if/when they meet. The intent of the catchweight in the Pac-Cotto fight was to put Cotto at a disadvantage.

Cotto would consistently come in at 146 lbs so in reality all he really had to shed was one extra pound from his peak weight.

Pac had just weighed-in at 138lbs against Hatton. So fighting his next fight at 147 would have been a huge disadvantage.

Fair is fair and the numbers are there. Pac went up from 138 to 145, and Cotto down from 146 to 145. Cotto has no business complaining about a deal like that.

Of course it matters or Balcq wouldve taken the fight at 147. Roach might be a PED head but hes no dummy

if roach knew 2 pounds wouldnt have affected cotto he wouldnt have asked.

but in general when you are in terrific shape even 1 pound will contribute to the fighters ability it just depends on the individual. just like some fighters can move up just 3/4 pounds and they are sluggish and cannot perform whereas some can and it does benefit them with extra weight

Pacquiao demanding the 2 lbs was a farce.

His win should have an asterisk next to it.

Also Cotto is not the one complaining this is just a topic of conversation now that a second Cotto Pac fight at 154lbs is being discussed.

when Manny fought Oscar at 147, Manny had to move up in weight and Oscar had to move down to 147. So once again, they both compromised.

The only one who didn't compromise with Manny at 147 is Clottey and now Floyd because or else the fight would never get made.

I don't think Roach was trying to purposefully weight drain cotto.. I think he was simply trying to make sure Cotto was a little more even in size with Pacquiao. That's all... and check through Boxrec and you'll see that Cotto came in at or near 146 lbs for more than just the Clottey fight. He's been coming into fights at or near that weight since he first moved up to face Carlos Quintana and I'm sure that's why Cotto took the contracted weight because he himself figured one extra pound wasn't that big a deal.

Which is why floyd didn't cut down to 144.

    I agree.

RRRIIIIGGGGHHHHTTTT, but Manny fought at his (then) highest level at the 147lb limit meaning there was no reason to suspect he wouldn't be at his best fighting at that weight again when facing Cotto. Thus making him asking Cotto to move down to 145lb a disadvantage to Cotto not a compromise.

So you're saying that when Hatton made Pac move down to 140 after the Oscar fight, Pac was at a huge disadvantage?

Or does the logic not apply in Pac's case.
