Catch weight fights. It DOES matter if you're forced to lose one or two pounds

Only by idiots. Anyone who thinks 1 measly pound means anything to a 10st+ man needs help.

There is no clear cut answer here. How much it effects the fighter depends on the indiviudual fighter. In the case of Cotto vs. Pacquiao, it seems that Pacquiao's side at least felt the 1 or 2 lbs. would make a difference. If they didn't, they would've never asked for a catchweight in the first place. Only Cotto himself truly knows if the catchweight was a problem.

I'm not saying it didn't affect Cotto. I'm just saying both had to give up something. Cotto by struggling to make weight, and Pacquiao by facing a much bigger opponent.

well yeah, i see what he is saying in that the person who has been fighting at WW has already adjusted to the speed and power of fighters at the weight...

but he also said his speed and power doesn't change going up.....but going down i wonder what he would say?

but in pacs case he only had 1 fight against a full 147lb fighter that has been consistently campaigning at 147lbs...

but in WW and JRWW many of the top fighters in that division dont come in on fight night to high over the fight limit either..

Pac always comes into fights weighting as much as a WW...so how does that factor in

One pound is nothing. One pound to a man who weighs over 10 stone is a heavy **** after a big lunch. Seriously, to say that one pound makes a difference is utter lunacy, you could sweat it off in 5 minutes and not notice it. Anyone who says otherwise has never cut weight for a boxing match.

It did not remotely affect Cotto. If you think otherwise, it shows you've never had to cut weight for a boxing match. One pound for someone that size is NOTHING whatsoever.

if u weight around 210lb naturally they would ask u to fight at 175lbs depending on ur build....

now imagine how much work it would be to lose that kind of weight...u would hit multiple plateaus in which u would have to change ur regiment so drastically that it shocks ur body to continue losing weight

at the point that a naturally 210lb man gets to 175lbs there is nothing left to lose but muscle and whatever water weight u have left....and that is nearly impossible without unhealthy means of action

so to say that 2lbs is nothing at that point is crazy....its something but like big reg said depending on the fighter it might not be that hard...

and in cottos case he said he felt fine so it is what it is

but he wasn't bigger at the weight in or fight night...

thats such a common misquote by people watching these catchweight fights

he beat someone who is usually a lot bigger in a fight where they both where the same size

Pac fight cotto at 147 and Pac comes in weighting 145 vs. cottos 147 then he beat a bigger guy

:good Exactly. Had Pac only been able to only weigh 141-145lbs then he is beating a bigger man, but forcing a catchweight takes away that advantage...which not so coincidentially was Cotto's only real advantage.

Cotto himself and his trainers have said the weight didnt make any difference and that he felt strong at that weight. You guys are really trying here...lol.
