Catch weight fights. It DOES matter if you're forced to lose one or two pounds

Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by Legend2, Jun 25, 2010.

  1. Pacquiao weighed in at 144 to Cotto's 145. So your argument here is idiotic.
Pacquiao weighed in at 129 vs JMM. Marquez weighed in at 130.

    I can keep going.

And roach said even 1 or 2 pounds make a difference when it comes to making weight

The catch weight was useful enough for them to feel a need to put it in the contract. THAT WE KNOW.

Going up is a lot different than going down. Cotto had to shed muscle, which drained him a bit. Manny just didn't have to shed as much. He comes in about 147 usually anyway. I don't think it would have changed the outcome much, but it's something to think about.

I thought it was BS to have a title on the line at a catchweight but Cotto is an idiot for signing the papers

As a competitor in sports where weight matters I know just how hard it is to make weight and the effects of losing too much or even doing it the wrong way

To me Miguel looked weak body wise

also he only fought the first 6 rounds hard showing he was affected

Catchweight or not Cotto's time at 147 in the first place was done much like how after the Torres debacle his camp new 140 was a problem id say after clottey and cotto 147 may have becam an issue as we saw a very fresh cotto at 154

that's not the point. The point is that Cotto has a good 8-10 pounds of natural weight advantage on Pacquiao. So if Pacquiao faces Cotto at his most comfortable weightclass (WW), PAcquiao is disadvantaged. By making Cotto work a little harder to make weight, it evens the playing field.

that didnt seem to really matter how big or small manny was it didnt matter that oscar was naturally bigger than him then miguel was and they fought at 147 not 145

your comment is trivial as usual....

and so what was the fight night weigh in

  11. They didn't weigh in on fight night so nobody knows for sure, but it's safe to assume Cotto was the bigger man in the ring that night. And nothing about my comment was "trivial," it completely contradicted your ignorant assertions about weigh-ins.

#1 being that Cotto didn't weigh-in higher than Pacquiao, when he did.
#2 that being lighter on the scale means you're smaller in the ring, which isn't always the case.

Simply put: If Pac is 'disadvantaged' at 147, then perhaps he shouldn't be fighting at Welterweight.

Specifically speaking about Cotto-Pac... Cotto weighed in at 146 for his fight against Clottey, and used to fight at 140lbs ... I really doubt the extra pound would have made a difference at all. Plus Cotto looked as fit as ever against Pac.

Roach is trash talking, what do you expect him to say? That it wont make a difference and that Pac is not gonna get any advantage from this? Besides, even if he thinks that, from the horses mouth and from his own trainer, they admitted, cotto's camp, the weight didnt make a difference and they felt strong, before the fight, after the fight and well after the fight.

    Talk about clutching for straws.
