145lbs to 151lbs. is a CATCHWEIGHT DIVISION. And that is manny pacquiaos division. in order to get a fight with pacquiao, you have to be: 1. Tailor made for pacquiao style 2. Weight drain 3. Coming of a loss 4. Last 2 fight must be lame and lousy (according to roach) 5. Under top rank promotion 6. Past your prime 7. Slow and not a counter puncher artist. like marquez 8. Never ask for random drug test 9. Must imitate a punching bag inside the ring 10. Dog lover
Isn't this the requirements of most popular or undefeated fighters? The fighters that don't care about all that and just want to fight pay the price ala' Mosley and Cotto. Even though they might have screwed thier reputations or health, i still respect old school fighters like them who want to challenge themselves. You will never hear what ifs with them after they retire unless it includes Floyd's name. lol.
I really don't like the whole catch weight thing, but titles being contested at a catch weight is disgusting.
I don't think a vacant title should be allowed to be fought for at a catchweight. It doesn't really make sense. If a title-holder chooses to defend his belt at a catchweight, that's his decision and I have no problem with it. That said, I think it's far more ******ed for Paul Williams to request a catchweight against Martinez for the MW title. He already beat Sergio at 160 and 3 of his last 5 fights have been contested at 160. I have no problem with Pacquiao fighting Margarito at 151, as he's never fought in the division, I just don't think any title should be at stake.
So basically almost every single boxer in the sport can get a fight with Pacquiao fighters who can't get a fight with Pacquiao: 1- Floyd Maywaether 2- Alexander Povetkin
his handlers have no confidence in him so his recent opponents (save Cotto) have been laughable yet strategically brilliant. ain't pac's fault, he ain't the business man
I was just going to ask about Williams. ESPN said it was Williams who asked for the catchweight of 157 for the Sergio rematch **but again what's the point? P-Will has had no problem making Middleweight in the past why mess with the weight? I know catch weights have quite a long history in boxing but what happened to just fighting within the division limits? I don't really see much of a positive gain for catchweights, and the boxing commissions really should ban them (CW's) for title fights as it's bad enough with all the belts available .. why devalue the belts that much more with these silly weight restrictions?
:huh If Cotto wasn't laughable, then why was one of Cotto's toughest opponents in Clottey laughable? And why was Hatton, the linear champion laughable? ...Who's laughable? His next opponent? The one who has wins over Cotto, the not-laughable, Clottey, Cintron and Martinez? I don't see what's laughable.
boo ****ing hoo stfu weight drained ? no one puts a gun to their head and makes them acept a fight at a weight they dont want to. pacman started his pro career at 107 pounds.... 30 pounds below what most of the guys he is beating up started theirs cry me a river homo :hi:
Catchweights shouldn't be used for title fights. The only reason I can understand catchweights being used are for fighters with a large difference in weight. Hopkins vs Pavlik for instance (although that could have been fought at SMW)
in my opinion, whats even worse than fighting at a catchweight for a vacant title, is two fighters, with ONE combined fight in that weight class in the last SIX YEARS, are fighting for a vacant title
I agree. The trouble is the commissions in large measure operate with their heads up their ass and will simply defer the matter to the Org sanctioning the fight. The Org official will smile and remind them how much money fighter A generates for the local economy. He will then excuse himself from the meeting and go deposit his 6 figure sanctioning fee cheque. While on the way to the bank he will daydream and hope that this catch weight trend continues to the point where more divisions will be created because as we all know 17 is just not enough. Ps- The Platinum and Topaz belts should be out by the middle of next year,
Williams has stated he intends to move back down. So I think the idea is to also keep himself at a point to work down from. The other thing about that is Martinez offered a catchweight of one single pound over the JrMW limit to Angulo to fight for the Lineal MW championship, which he should have taken before Los Federales caught on to him. If Paul is trying to move back down, why the hell wouldn't he ask for it if he felt inclined to? It's less of a weight limiting fight than what Martinez was seeking. Everyone likes to ***** like the WBC is THE commission for boxing. Everyone knows they'll gladly make exceptions and install whoever the **** they want in their rankings, especially if they're Mexican. They're probably the most crooked out of all the bodies with how they shuffle fighters to the front at will. Margarito won their international belt, which until they invented the silver title and said "uhhhh, sure silver means number 1 contender", the international WBC title usually got first crack at their title. So like it or not, the WBC felt inclined to rank Margarito in their top 3. It is what it is guys. Margarito has fought at JrMW 9 times in his career, and I personally can't figure out how him having to cut 4 pounds less than his normal division limit is going to be a detriment to him.
catchweights are fine catchweights for title are a bit distasteful catchweights for vacant titles are ******ed catchweights for vacant titles that fall within a weight class that the two fighters are completely irrelevant in is criminal
