Catchweights- good or bad for boxing?

I don't mind them if it's the only way to make a megafight. Otherwise, not a fan.

 

I don't like them because after you get excuses like "he was weight drained" (which can't really be proven)

 

100% bad if any sort of title is involved. I'm not 100% against them, but in recent years they've been **** and a waste of time...

 

they should add a catchweight champion out there.

They're a disgrace

Back in the olden days there were far fewer weight classes than there are today

The greats of the past would be turning in their graves

 

They're not bad but I don't like them, I believe in the official weight classes.

 

Using weight to weaken an opponent to give you an advantage is absurd. It taints the fight.

 

What's the significance of traditional weight limits anyway. All limits serve the same purpose.

 

It makes no difference.

The weights in boxing are already pretty arbitrary anyway - what difference does it make if both fighters fight at 150 or 154? The rules are the same and the conditions are the same.

People can complain about it giving an opponent an advantage - but how is that any different to asking someone to come up and fight you at 147 instead of 140? Does that mean the weight system is to blame in that case too?

The circumstances don't change.

They're really only hurting themselves I think.
Better without but doesn't matter awhole lot.

 

On one hand I hate titles being decided on them but on the other these guys signed the contract, they knew what they got themselves into though I guess fighters do anything for the big money fight

Catch weights are ok if Ward wants to fight Huck. Ward never fought at cruiser and Huck never fought at lhwt. Catch weights make zero sense between 2 guys at the same class unless it's above their usual weight like Garcia vs Petersen

 

They're fine when they concern fighters of differing divisions, but they shouldn't be allowed in title fights. Certainly not in lineal title fights.

I remember she there was talk of their being a 156lb CW fight by Bradley and Cotto for middleweight lineal ship. Um, no.

 

The notion that they make fights possible that otherwise wouldn't happen rings pretty false to me. More often they merely make it possible for the bigger draw to use his leverage for an advantage in the ring.
