    Catley was robbed badly that night.

    Will have a look for you mate, Might be the robbery was that bad that people can't show it :lol:.

    Woodhall was drained at the weight by then and Catley is a really underrated fighter.

    Havent seen that fight for some years.
    Catley was very underated when you consider what he did -

    Beat undefeated future 3 time WBC SMW champ Beyer
    beat future WBC SMW champ Lucas
    some felt he was unlucky against Woodhall and undefeated Haussler

    Couldnt find it either when looking but saw Woodhall vs Beyer. Havents seen that one for years either

    How did you have it Bailey if you can remember? I had it quite wide for Catley. IIRC Woodhall sat on ringsteps and admitted he shouldn't be taking belt home. Extremely honest..

    Its the one and only time that I have ever heard the winner of the fight say flat outright that he didn't deserve the nod. I have a lot of respect for Woodhall because of that

    I cant remember how I scored it. I was watching it in the pub live at the time and thought Catley had taken it. I watched it again the next day and saw a closer fight, but cant remember how I scored it when sober. I seem to think I felt Catley was a few points up.
    Very honest of Woodhall. I remember that post fight interview clearly (clearer than the fight itself) and Woodhalls face when the score was announced.
    I seem to recall G McCrory scored it a draw and felt Woodhall was being hard on himself.


    Skills/Ice
    I think the real thing that stood out was that we expected Woodhall to get rid of Catley and Glen but up a good show. I think Glen was a sub?
    Woodhall looked better after when beating Nardiello.
    Then Woodhall lost to Beyer and Catley surprised us with that sudden KO in the final round against Beyer

    IIRC at the weigh in Woodhall was drinking loads of pure orange juice. He was having issues with the weight and no wonder when he's being messed about so much at that time.

    good fight this and catley won it by bout 3/4 rounds.

    great show by woodhall who looking gutted that he had won when he didnt deserve it.

    good fighter catley always good to watch as he was vulnerable and you felt he could lose to any good fighter but also beat top fighters.

    a very good crop of supermiddles at that time who were underated esp catley and dean francis

    Woodhall
    Catley
    all as world champs at some point
    Then there was
    Francis
    Starie
    Woods before he moved up
    Baker
    Carr
    I forgot H Graham also

    I always liked Richie. He was a very good fighter at his best and a really humble down to earth nice guy. He had more than his fair share of bad luck in his career though. He may well have have brought home a silver medal in the Olympics had he not been unlucky enough to have a young Roy Jones Jr. standing in the opposite corner.

    He had some terrible luck when he got his first crack at a world title too (against Keith Holmes). He'd been waiting for ages for that shot as well - he'd been the mandatory challenger for 20 months. Then a couple of weeks before the fight he had to have surgery on a nasty elbow injury and was advised by a doctor to pull out but Mickey Duff told him he wouldn't get another shot for at least another 15 months if he did. If that wasn't bad enough, he was also subjected to a dirty tricks campaign over in the US by Holmes' people.

    Here's what he had to say about some of the psychological games they played during the build up to the fight.

    ''Fighting away from home opens your eyes. People were knocking on my door at 4 am. They took me for a medical and said they'd lost all my forms, which was nonsense. I was taken on journeys that were supposed to be 15 minutes but lasted an hour.''

    ''I lost fair and square on the night and there are no excuses but things were bad from the start. Everything is against you. The crowd, the promoter and the local people, they try to make it as uncomfortable as possible. If you win a title abroad then you're a true champion, no doubt.''

    He was actually in training to mount another world title assault after the Calzaghe fight, culminating in what he hoped would lead to a big money unification rematch against Joe, but bad luck struck again when he suffered a double stress fracture to his vertebrae, which he wasn't able to fully recover from. A specialist told him that he'd have to completely give up doing roadwork if he wanted to continue and that he should ride a bike to compensate for it, and although he gave it a go, he said he was never able to regain the kind of fitness he needed to fight at the top level doing it that way (the only level he was interested in fighting at) so he decided to hang up his gloves. Catley was a good fighter too, he could really bang.

    Cheers mate, I'm going to watch this later on. I was reading an old Boxing News mag recently and they said it was a poor result, Woodhall looked like he was on a downer at the post fight presser.

    Why do we have so many super middleweight title holders but very few at middleweight. Makes you wonder...

    Because SMW was long considered a ******* division and belts were more readily available to promoters looking for an easy world title for their fighters.
