Forget the Lee that fought Hagler. Remember the Lee that fought LoCicero and looked invincible. How would he have done against the Duran that fought Hagler, the Hearns that fought Duran? the Leonard that fought Hagler? And how would he have done vs. Iran Barkely, Vito Antuofermo, John Mugabi, Bennie Briscoe, and Cyclone Hart?

The Locicero fight was fantastic and a classic in its own right. But for as much heart as those two men showed we have to remember that John Locicero was no world beater. And I don’t think William Lee had the ability to beat anyone who was. He might have made a fight with someone like Iran Barkley interesting and perhaps given a good account of himself against a few others. But at the end of the day he loses to any good world champion.

good assessment. You don't think he had the potential to beat the dangerous but upsettable Mugabi, Hart, Briscoe, and Antuofermo? or even the so-so chinned Hearns?

Well in truth Lee WAS a very hard puncher or at least I think he was. Given that his power was never tested against a true world class opponent it’s difficult to assess. I suppose if put in the ring with another slugger who had a shaky chin then a lucky knockout isn’t out of the question. Not something I’d bet money on though. Lee was dicey and inconsistent.

Yeah, honestly I’m not sure I’d give him any more of a puncher’s chance against top guys than I would LoCicero — both could bang. It was a great matchup that was made and a thrilling fight. But if the Caveman (what a great nickname) is going life-and-death with LoCicero it’s hard to see him beating a lot of top guys.

His two best wins are against Marcos Geraldo (in one, very nice) and LoCicero. Not a world-class resume. You can throw out the Hagler result and you still have to deal with Frank Fletcher taking him out in four, proving that just as in prehistoric times an Animal has an edge over a Caveman.

All true. William “ Caveman” Lee could probably be described as a high end club fighter.

Frank Fletcher knocked Lee out in 1980.

Lee did not look invincible against LoCicero. He was badly hurt before stopping John in a competitive war. Lee lacked defense and chin. All the top 80s Middleweights would he favored over him. He was a fringe contender- a top 10-15 type who lucked into a title shot.

Lee could have given Curtis Parker and John Collins a potential loss.

Lee was no world beater, and if I remember right Hagler dropped him with a jab?
Sorry, getting dropped that way doesn't a world beater make lol. But he could hit.

You're right, he was inconsistent. He lost to Fletcher in 4 rds, but beat Geraldo in 1, he beat LoCicero in 5, but lost to Hagler in 1. I do think Lee had the potential to be a top middlweight.

It's absolutely incredible to me how he fared against Hagler, but then against LoCicero he absorbed like 25 punches that would have knocked anybody out in that amazing 5th round.

Very true, and as long as Caveman wasn't in Chicago he has a shot.
