Two things I watched lately got me to grinning about the boxing purist's love for a good no nonsense caveman vs thug slugfest.

First, I watched Evander Holyfield v Bert Cooper. Is there anyone who Bert Cooper could not drag into an ugly brawl?? :think

Second, I watched Toney v McCallum I (a technical classic) and Rogers Mtagwa v Tomas Villa one after the other and enjoyed them basically the same amount, but for different reasons.

This thread, then, is a proposed tribute to the caveman brawl and the bar fight!

I'll be the first to mention Foreman-Lyle, the term "caveman slugfest" is a perfect fit to describe that war.

The most exciting bout I ever saw.

    March 30, 1989

    Felt Forum, NYC.
    Ike Padilla versus Leland Hardy

Bombs for 3 straight rounds, with each guy hitting the floor and out on their feet.
    A true Pier-6 brawl.

And Hardy had another pier sixer right after that but I can't recall the opponent name.

I just watched Foreman vs Lyle Holy ****!! That was great, there was no boxing involved , just two guys trying to kill each other . I truly thought Lyle had Foreman in the fourth rd. I can't believe Foreman came back in that one .What heart by both fighters. A classic all the way. I loved it .

Every fight with Leland 'Sugarman' Hardy was a fun war.

And the guy was bright, as he was a Chinese Language Major in College.

Ike Padilla was a highly-regarded fighter, and was expected to KO Hardy.
Padilla had some great amateur credentials, and had signed a nice pact
with Madison Square Garden to promote his fights.

    BOOM BOOM,,,,,,Out Go The Lights.

In a recent interview with "On the Ropes", George said he thought he was going to die during his slugfest with Lyle, but he was willing to.

Many years ago, Al Bernstein was talking about his commentary of that fight. He said that it was on a hot July evening in Detroit, and the arena was packed with spectators with no air conditioning.. He guessed that the temperature in the building must have been around 100 degrees, and at times felt like he was going to pass out.. He also said that he can only imagine how those two fighters must have felt, battling at such an intense pace.

That fight was a LOT of fun to watch. Hardy actually conducted part of the post fight interview after the Padilla fight in Chinese, if I recall. Became a successful sports agent after his career in boxing.

Has Renaldo Snipes vs Lionel Washington been mentioned yet?
