I know they fought 4 times, but the 4th really didn’t justify the trilogy IMO!

This is an awesome series that everyone should watch. The final result is 2-2 in the 4 fights although I scored 3-1 for Marquez and felt he nipped the 3rd fight.

How about you guys any memories of this series? And who do you felt edged it, if anyone?

They fought for 28 rounds over 4 fights with 26 of them being scorable rounds.

Of those 26 rounds I really feel like 18 of them could be scored in a variety of ways either even or for the other guy.

I felt like in the 8 clearer rounds Marquez’s skill gave him a 7-1 advantage (although TBF if I discount the 4th fight it was only a 5-1 edge)

In the closer rounds that could go either way I had Marquez narrowly up 9-7-2, but feel these could be different upon each viewing or others cards.

I have Marquez winning the series 3-1 or 2-1 in the only 3 fights that matter. I had Marquez up 16-8-2 in total rounds or 14-8-2 in the only 3 fights that mattered.

I thought the stoppage in fight 2 was premature

I thought the pt deducted from Marquez in rd 3 was disappointing. I don’t mean the ref wasn’t justified I just find it a shame that without it the 3rd fight is a draw instead of a Vazquez SD victory.

    Official Vazquez 2-1
    My view Marquez 2-1

Great performances from 2 great warriors!!!!

I know some people find this fight hard to find but if you dig a little you can find almost anything! Here is a link for the first fight and you can find 2 and 3 below it with 4 being readily available on YouTube!

If you haven’t watched it in a while sit back and enjoy!

Great fights. I attended III & IV - great atmospheres.

I felt Rafael barely edged out fight III by a point but it was so close that any result by one point was fine.

I remember it well and it is my favorite modern day rivalry … I have often mentioned these 2 going at it in many other threads ... So exciting and the 4th is misleading because Vazquez had his eye injury and ended up with the detached retina. There was no predicting any outcome with these 2.. Evenly matched as it gets and give one take one at it's best. Back to back Ring's FOTY..These fights physically ruined each other .. And if remember correctly Vazquez permanently lost his eye

Better than Gatti-Ward, Barrera-Morales, and Pacquiao-Marquez. 3rd fight was the best this century and probably top 10 all time.

What are your thoughts on fight 3, who did you think won it?

Funny, I thought the first fight was the best, followed by the 2nd then the 3rd.....not sure if there is another trilogy I preferred sequentially like this one. But you really cant go wrong with any of them.
The flaw in ALL of them for me was the ending....in the first fight Vazquez seemed to come on in the final round and then retired in his corner between rounds....in the 2nd I thought the ref stopped it to soon....in the 3rd the pt deduction had a huge impact as the fight would have been a draw without it. Either way 3 great fights in any order of preference.

I suggested once here that Rafael Marquez wasn't far off his brother in talent and accomplishment and it was poo-pooed roundly. Still not sure I agree JM was THAT much better.

It's been a long time Philly. You now how it works, fights like these you need to sit down, re watch and score.. These would be great for Kev's FOTW

I think they have kind of died off unfortunately. I think we have only done one week on the last 4 and most of them only got 3-4 cards turned in...doesn’t seem like a lot of guys like to score fights...so I have just been picking my own, (and did this one the past 2 days ) and posting in the what fights did you watch/score today thread.

Sort of related Philly, do you know any resources to get better at scoring fights?

It's something I've wanted to get into / get better at for a while now. I'm good at analysing fighters, but not scoring.

Actually I got an appointment to talk to the Pennsylvania state athletic commission this week about this....I have also emailed other governing bodies as well as the association of boxing commissions but none of them have gotten back to me.

I have been reading a ton on this for the past few months, although that probably makes me a dangerous amateur rather than skilled at it lol. But if I get any good info I will be sure to pm you or start a thread.

I'm no expert either but after doing it for a long time, you trust your eyes. It is subjective thus we see whacky cards or ones we do not agree with over the years … What I do is remove all bias, score on who has more clean punches landed, power, damage, result of the shots, effective aggression, ring generalship, etc .. Again the importance/weight of the factors probably varies from judge to judge... You have been watching boxing long enough that you are probably better at it than you think … practice. But scoring fights is difficult for me, so many close rounds in boxing!! I sometimes go back and watch a round over again, a luxury the judges do net get

I would also say turn the commentary off!!!! Or listen to a language based one that you don’t speak. I know many boxing fans who don’t think it impacts them or that they are above it but the subliminal opinions do cloud our objectivity even in the most strong willed and obstinate of people. There are quite s few articles on this topic in boxing and other fields as well. Judges do not have commentary, Harold ledderman used ear plugs so he didn’t have to hear them as in his words what they are describing does not match what I am seeing! So my suggestion to everyone is to turn Paulie off! And shut him up and out!!!

Edit: and don’t drink or do drugs
