The only other fight I remember this happening with is Haney vs Loma, and we all know why.

To prevent informed betting? Whatever the reason it's BS and tears up another unspoken contract between the fans and the "sport". Who wants to watch pantomime? That'll be the last "weigh in" I tune into. No clicks for you! I say good day!

Only in boxing can they do something like this, without some type of announcement, just a flat flip-off to the fans. Whoever is responsible needs to provide a list of fights where this has taken place & why they've decided on this.

This is one of the things that bothers me most about the current state of the game; the very obviousness of corrupt activity (like lots of Canelo scorecards, for instance). It's just so blatant and in-your-face, truly disgusting stuff.

At least, back when the mafia ran boxing, they tried to make it appear on the up-and-up. Now, it's almost like they're laughing at the fans.

This is far more corrupt than so-called "Canelo" scorecards. Judging controveries is not obvious corruption. Scoring is very subjective and open to interpretation. This is actual corruption, corruption and SHADYNESS. To make a change like this don't announce it then just pretend that it's normal without giving any kind of an explanation. This is corruption. We need to understand how this happened and how this just became a thing out of nowhere!! We need to know if this is just a Showtime thing, an American thing, a Vegas thing or a whole of boxing thing. Weigh-ins need to be live and not pre-determined period. Behind closed doors weigh-ins, "ceremonial" weigh-ins are flat out unacceptable!!

I agree with most of this but I must say, having been a fight fan for 50 years, that I've never seen a boxing superstar with anywhere near the amount of questionable cards as Canelo. There's just too many to be a coincidence.

I consider myself a pretty open-minded person but not to the point of denying the obvious.

The first time I heard of this caper was, not surprisingly, an Alvarez fight. The 3rd Golovkin fight had a private weigh - in.
Wonder if Mauricio is behind this to “improve” the safety of boxers, as he trots out, when asked awkward questions!

I think this is about control of the images. They think they'll sell more PPVs if the two guys are a few hours into rehydration and looking up for the fight, rather than one or both looking like a shipwreck victim. Maybe they're also concerned about more people increasingly questioning the current system also, especially with the health concerns around rehydration. I guess one other aspect is if there's a money guy who is struggling to make weight they can get the pay-off organised in private and maybe we'll never know about it?

More likely to be the first though, they're always about the money.

UFC have been doing it for years, nothing new.

I think as a fighter as well, you're not having to hang around whilst dehydrated waiting to weigh in... you can get weighed in the morning and then start rehydrating then jump on the scales publicly a little while later.

It's good thing for the fans at fight week. Adds to the promotion. I went to the Kambo Haney one where George missed weight met a bunch of characters.

It's also a little revenue raiser too, often these are ticketed events.

    Edit-

I misunderstood the question. I think the ceremonial part is just about the event. MCing building feativity buzz. The official weigh in part is actually a stressful important process which is best being done in a controlled environment.

Weigh-ins are getting later and later. Why should the fighters have to wait until the night before the fight to start rehydrating? It's stupid.

Let the fighters weigh in a bit earlier in the day and it's not really an issue.

One public weigh in on the morning of the fight to make it a level playing field for both fighters, the fighters with the deepest pockets have the financial clout to manipulate the day before fight weigh ins and then weigh in on fight night well above the weight of the Division there fighting in . If Boxing insists on letting fighters weigh in on the day before the fight then make it compulsory for the fighters to weigh in an hour before fight time, let’s out these weight bully’s !

HBO used to announce the fighters weights on the night with their " unofficial scales " . Can't remember what fight but just recently there was a bit of drama with scale tampering. It's better for business if that crap is caught in a private setting, easier to brush under the rug. Whatever the reason it's still bs because the fans don't get the full picture.
