I hope he stops his next opponent. Maybe he's FINALLY learned to plant his feet.

    Losers' lap.

    Saucedo already won the race.

    And heeeere's the fight itself.

There's actually quite a lot to like about Cuenca. With his complete lack of stoppage victories, you would think he was a more defensive fighter than he is.

He bobs and weaves very well, with a tight guard. Most fighters usually are either/or, and it's a much more difficult thing to do in practice than people think.

He has very educated footwork and moves very well. However, when under attack he has a tendency to move straight back until reaching the ropes. Only upon reaching the ropes does he turn away. This will cost him at some point.

He also doesn't counterpunch as much as he could. His relative lack of hand speed limits his countering opportunities. He can spot the openings, but not always reach them.

Somewhere in between. About a year ago he was actually scheduled to be Marquez's opponent for the interim WBO light welterweight title abandoned by Timothy Bradley. Instead, I think due to Cuenca sustaining an injury or something, Marquez fought Sergey Fedchenko.

I said at the time and still believe that Fedchenko is a major downgrade from Cuenca. The Argentine would've been far more dangerous to JMM - obviously not in the physical sense (although Fedchenko is a feather fist himself) but in terms of styles & versatility he brought more to the table than the Ukrainian.

I made a fairly in-depth post breaking him down a while ago, but...

AL pretty much nutshells it. :good

Finally got around to watching Cuenca vs. Ponce II, and talk about pillow-fighting. They met with 7 combined stoppages in 80 bouts. :patsch

Anyway, CRC looked nice. That's him at his best there. Defense, movement, arrhythmic variety with the jab, quick ambush combos, feints...

I'm not the least bit surprised to discover the finishing blow was a body shot. That is Cuenca's forte.

Also, I done told y'all he's better than Fedchenko! :tong (Ponce lost to Fedchenko by TKO7...and lasted two fewer rounds against Cuenca :yep)

I have a feeling Cuenca is doing heavy bag work on the speedbag.

...or maybe he's been doping in reverse all these years, taking estrogen or something to reduce his brute force so no matter how flush he connects on someone it's almost certain to go the distance, allowing him to bet on his own matches going Over 9.5 or whatever... :think

:yep In all seriousness, though, as much as it's tempting to write him off as a joke with a record fit for trivia games, he is a legitimately decent boxer and highly efficient within the parameters of what he does.
