Bit of both I would say. I think it's time to find out for real.

Bear in mind that he had no amateur career like his dad so that's partly a reason for his padded record.

But its not as though he just one day picked up some gloves and decided to turn pro. His Dad and other top trainers would have been teaching him from a very young age.

He is alright, possibly a fringe contender, maybe even pick up a trinket one day but people tend to look at the name and expect greatness. He isnt nor ever will be great but he isnt bad.

he is a decent fighter with a good punch and solid chin.

he will be found out at a higher level because he is simply not that skillfull and has a porous defense and no head movement.

if he was from the uk we would call him a decent level domestic fighter who would be found out at world level.

But the best experience you can get is in the ring. You can train all you want but you can't truly test yourself till you're in the ring. That's why an amateur career helps as that's when you pick up ring experience, learn to deal with different opponents and learn from your mistakes. Chavez Jr. is having to learn from his mistakes in a pro ring where, especially for him, there's more attention than pressure.

He's not awful. He's clearly a C-Level fighter at the moment, which can't be hype. You can't hype K.O power and a good chin. It'll be interesting to see how he gets on at JMW, it isn't the greatest division around is it?

He looks like he could make 147, and would be a beast there.....with a few adjustements he could be very good, he has some decent attributes.

Let's see how he gets on in the Vanda rematch.

I think Chaves JR is a good fighter but with lot of hype backing him because of his Dad. I don't think though he has talent to beat the Elite at JR middle like Forrest,Williams and De La Hoya. I would love see him in with John Duddy or Sergio Mora both men but both men I would give edges over JR:hat

Angulo, Krikland, Ronald Hearns are all bigger prospects then him.

Forrest, Dzinzindruk, Williams, Verno, Mosley, Santos, Akcine are all on a level chavez would never get on. But he is not that bad as some say, he can punch and has heart, he is fun to watch. But he'll probably even lose to Irish John Duddy, who is a big Hype-job too

He is a fighter with potential but the hype job outweighs him.
