I would think Glenn Johnson is as intimidating as Hopkins, the difference is that Johnson literally pressures from opening to closing bell. You are vastly underrating Dawson's ability.
I'm a Hopkins fan but he will get beat up bad against Dawson who is all wrong for him at this point in his career. Dawson isn't there to be hit, is fast can go to the body throw combos has a jab fight on the inside and can counter. Dawson is wrong Hopkins will have a plan but he won't be able to execute it with much success against Dawson.
Dawson has one major technical weakness, he has very poor footwork. He is good with his punches, and his defense is decent, but when he throws certain punches he leaves himself in position to be countered. Glen Johnson, and Pascal proved that. If Dawson comes out too aggressive he will be countered by Hopkins with equal aggression. If Dawson comes out too defensive he will be mauled by Hopkins. Dawson has to fight the perfect fight and his only advantage is speed and power.
The Dawson that shut out Tarver the 2nd time around has to show up ..I hope that Manny Stewart improves his foot work .
I believe this Dawson is as good as the Taylor (relative to weight/class/etc) who beat Hopkins twice, I would expect the same type of fight. I understand the "improvements" Hopkins has made, but I would also consider Dawson more refined and complete than Jermain was then. Jab, workrate, and good movement will keep Hopkins from getting off as he needs to. Hopkins will have his moments, but Dawson ain't Pascal, and he won't win this fight...IMO. I then hope Dawson rematches and beats the **** out of Pascal's sorry ass before fighting Cloud.
Where am I vastly underrating Dawson's abilities? Nothing in my post challenges Dawson's abilities. Dawson is a good boxer who is getting better. Hopkins has been in the ring with better competition.
Dawson is an excellent boxer, a classy and skillful professional in the modern sense, no doubts about it, love the guy's style trully. Now, r we questioning Hopkins toughness to engage compared to Dawson's? The same Dawson that was sent reeling down by Adamek and won on boxing skills and sleekness only, the same Dawson that was taking leather like a mummy from the Road Warrior in the fight he was supposed to have lost and piled up points by outlanding a guy with lead, scoring str8 shots, a guy who was mauled and cut and bruised by a former SMW who was not given a slightest chance against him? He is more of a fighter than Hopkins? Let me tell you how is going to be Dawson's fight against Hopkins - bad chad is going to chicken from the moment Bernard breathes over him in the faceoff prior to the fight.
Hopkins always has a game-plan. Pascal didn't just "forget how to throw a punch" and let Hopkins dictate the pace, Hopkins continuously took away the punching angle. Dawson should put up a good fight, but it seems like he doesn't care, and he hasn't shown moment-to-moment thought patterns able to counteract Hopkins' execution of a game-plan.
I am not misinterpreting what you are saying. If you mean to say that Pavlik and Pascal still may have lost had they been more aggressive then say that instead of telling us to look at their poor work rate during their respective Hopkins fights. In the post I commented on, you blame the low work rate, and I disagreed. And yes, Hopkins will be the toughest opponent Dawson ever faced. As I stated earlier, this still does not mean Hopkins will win. But to act like Dawson has faced this murderers row of opponents and Hopkins will just be another name is not the case. On the contrary, Hopkins has faced serious competition for years and Chad is just another name.
I agree that Hopkins is the toughest test for Dawson but disagree that Chad is "just another name." Dawson isn't Pascal or Pavlik. The most recent guys who boxed Hopkins at range were Calzaghe and Taylor, so that's the model of bout we should expect to see here. I've been critical of Dawson's workrate and especially against Pascal, but he's a steady boxer who mostly stays in position and utilizes lateral movement. He's not going to be overly aggressive but will stay in the pocket and hamper Hopkins' offense. Really, most of what Jermain Taylor did was simply stay in the pocket and turn. He didn't land many shots, but Hopkins isn't comfortable being in constant range of his opponent. This has been a theme throughout his career. He wants to engage selectively, not be forced into constant defensive awareness. Pascal had success when he punched but spent too much time outside range. His pouncing style was very effective against the more sedate Dawson, but Chad's weakness versus Pascal is a strength against Bernard. It's a bad fight for Hopkins, though all the mental advantages are in his favor. Chad can win, but for now I'm going 50/50 on it due to Bernard stepping up on the big stage while the jury is out on Dawson.
American level plodder meets flat track bully with IQ of adult alsation. Think I'll sleep through this one thanks.
Hopkins is going to surprise a lot of people here. Again. Dawson's vulnerability and openness to right hands, and inability to deal with roughing tactics, will be apparent. Either way, it should be an interesting fight between two decent light heavyweights.
