Chad Dawson is NOT the fighter he once was

Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by YoungSlickness, Aug 27, 2012.

  1. been reviewing some of his and Wards old fights and got reminded of how truly good Dawson used to be. back when he straight humiliated Adamek and beat Johnson and Tarver quite easily. then, i think of his lackluster performances against Pascal, Diaconu, and a 47 year old Bhop. he is not that same active combination punching slick southpaw he once was. he seems unsure of himself nowadays and is not willing to let his beautiful combinations flow like he should. its seems as though he will take NO risks in the ring nowadays even if he is losing. that type of **** will get him wrecked against someone as physically and mentally tough as Ward. and top it all off, he has never had inside fighting skills, which Ward specializes in.

but all in all, he is still a great fighter and would beat everyone @ SMW and LHW, besides Ward of course :yep.
    does anyone agree?

Ive been saying there will be opportunities for him to really let his hands go vs Ward and take control but im not so sure he can pull the trigger. He looked ok vs Hopkins but he held back and didnt take the risks necessary to really dominate the fight. There will be no room for that vs Ward. To beat Ward you will have to do something youve never done before, esp with Ward having the weight and home town advantage. I like Dawson in this fight but Wards confidence is scary and his will to win and ability to adjust and execute a game-plan will win him this fight.

Since the first Johnson fight he's been a lot more cautious.

  5. its kind of complicated when analyzing his fight with Hopkins based on the fact that no one really has ever looked good against him. so im not sure who to blame in that fight. but then again, Dawson is so skilled and young, you'd think he'd just dominate Bhop. which he did, but not in the way a youngster should do against an almost 50 year old man.

He did just enough to win the fight, but didnt make a statement. I dont blame him after the shenanigans Bhops pulled in the first fight. But Dawson needs to come out and lay it all on the line vs Ward. If we dont see something explosive by the 4th or 5th rd, then its over, Ward will control every aspect of the fight. Ward is the kinda guy where if u show him up, he steps up his game and raises the bar again. I dont think Dawson will be able to keep up with the intensity Ward brings.

You make a damn good point with this 1...Prime example, Pascal\Dawson...First let me say that I dont take nothing from Pascal from his fight with Dawson because he did what he had to do to win...With that being said, the skill level between the 2 was very wide...Dawson had all the tools to beat Pascal and make it an easy night if he fought to his ability. (in which he didnt) He really didnt show up mentally.

Now foward to the Hopkins fight, he looked poised and matured...I agree he's gonna need to show up on top of his game if he's gonna beat Ward....IMO, if he's mentally ready and prepared, he could give Ward fits...but its always a downside with Dawson, which one will show up??:conf

Dawson was never really that great. he has no punching power.

  11. :patsch yes, because punching power is what makes you a great fighter. Dawson was one of the best when he first burst on the scene. that's a fact.

his power is also underrated. he's just not aggressive enough and doesn't go all out for KO's.

lack of punching power doesn't mean you're not good

Dawson was always a combination boxer, he throws combos from different angles, plus that awkward southpaw stance makes him dificult to hit

I doubt he will fight Ward on the inside, if he keeps Andre at a distance with his jab, he will win by boring UD, but he will win, if he allows Ward to bully him around on the inside, he's in serious trouble

The problem with Dawson is that he's constantly switching trainers and that effects his performance. I thought he was best with Floyd Mayweather Sr.

I was reading an interview with Dawson in Fighting Fit magazine and they were talking about how Chad is at his best when he uses his reflexes and speed to throw multipunch combinations.

He said he loves doing padwork and that Emmanuel Steward wasn't big on that so they didn't click together. Dawson also didn't like that Manny was trying to have him fight like a Klitschko, by staying tall and throwing mostly 1-2s.

Based on that is sounds like Floyd Sr. was a perfect trainer for him. Sad to hear that personal issues got in the way. But it is what it is, that's the past, I think with Scully Dawson will fight to his potential and beat Ward.
