I'm defending Dawson here even though I was not impressed by him against Adamek, Mendoza, Johnson. but against Tarver I was impressed. Actually imo Kessler and Dawson have a similar style of fighting, apart from being orthodox and southpaw
It was his comeback fight, what do you expect? He didn't look like the same Kessler but still managed to KO his opponent and win practically every round bar perhaps 1 on-route to the stoppage. Rounds was what he needed. And he would look outclassed at times, because Joe is a fantastic fighter who can make a lot of guys look like that, the fact is at times it was very competitive and in fact Kessler even looked the better fighter at times, and 116-112 is in no way a domination, just a comfortable defeat. I didn't say anything about Kessler walking through Dawson, so don't put words into my mouth. In fact, I never once mentioned Dawson. He's a talented fighter, but there's still question marks. His chin for example, and his level of opposition up until now. I don't think he's faced a truly world-class fighter yet, Adamek was struggling with the weight, Tarver is way past his best and Johnson probably too, I don't think he's truly world-class either, just a very, very tough guy and he gave Dawson a lot of problems.
I think there is a strong case to be made that Kessler might be the most overrated fighter out there. Now I'm a fan of his and he is undoubtedly skilled, but what exactly has he done to justify some of these claims that people are making about him. Let's think about it. Took 3-4 rounds from Calzaghe--yes, so did Bernard Hopkins (who frankly took more) and Sakio Bika, and that's just recently. Bika gets nowhere near the hype Kessler does, for good reason--he's Sakio Bika--and Hopkins gets **** all the time, but they both have equal or greater accomplishments as Kessler. Pitched a shut-out against Andrade--Yes, and looked spectacular doing it. That's his job, to beat journeymen/contenders. Andrade--other than what should have been a late round KO--was handled by unproven Lucien Bute. KOd Markus Beyer--Yes it was a good KO, but really, who was Beyer? Decent German beltholder who got a couple close decisions in his back yard (Lucas and Green) and had a propensity for hitting the canvas. Sartison, HAussler, etc. Speaks for itself. Some of you are going to go on about 'Hater this and Hater that.' and that's fine, but when you really think about it, Kessler gets more praise for fewer accomplishments that most boxers out there.
you're the one putting words into my mouth. I never said 116-112 is a domination. And the thread starter did say that Kessler would destroy Dawson. Thats what i was debating.
How did you score the fight? I had 116-112...just like all 3 of the judges I just watched and scored it again yesterday. Jonhson won(IMO) rounds 7,10,11,12 Dawson clearly won that fight..he won rounds 1-6 and 8,9. Even if he lost 7-12 Johnson would have only got a draw....atschatsch soundly beaten
You said he was 'nearly schooled'. A true schooling is where a fighter is made to look amateurish and loses pretty much every round. Kessler didn't look amateurish, just Calzaghe looked the better fighter overall on the night, and he was nowhere near losing every round.
I cant remember how i scored it, but remember knowing for certain Johnson had won. Guess thats why that fight still sticks out in my mind - for the umpteenth time Glen Johnson was robbed. I just dont understand all the hype the guy gets on this board. I understand why Kessler gets his hype after seeing how close the Calzaghe fight actually was. Kessler was winning the fight over the first half, and was very dangerous throughout. Dawson has fought no one near the level of Calzaghe. There have been some good posts here, so he must be better than i give him credit for. I've just not seen it yet
Dawson has very good skills, and I appreciate what he can do in the ring but he's a bit overrated. Against Tarver, he looked great but his win against Johnson is disputed by many and that's all that he really has on his resume so far. I'd like to see him accomplish a bit more before I call him the next great champion.
Soundly beaten by G.Johnson? Clearly you didn't watch the fight.... Sure Glen put a lot of pressure on him and landed some strong blows.. but Johnson was outboxed the majority of the rounds... You clearly are just one of those people who consider any new up and comer from the US a "hype job"
