My money would be on Dawson, whose bigger, stronger, and has the skills set to give Calazghe trouble. I see Dawson hurting Calzaghe early, like both Jones and Hopkins did in his last 2 fights. I see Dawson walking through Calzghe's slaps and landing the more meanful punches, and either knocking Calzaghe out late in the fight or winning a one sided decision.
Chad Dawson, because he would be fighting against himself by himself. Calzaghe is retired. H2H, Calzaghe @ 168lbs
Calzaghe. Dawson doesn't have the automatisms to score as much as Calzaghe and since he is not/would not be the aggressor, there you have it - effective aggression, ring generalship, volume and connect rates, everything on Calzaghe's side... Defense wouldn't make it for Dawson as well.
I might be in the minority, but I'm not sure why..... I would have to go with Calzaghe in this situation, as I think his experience would be the key. Chad is very good, but I don't think he has the extra things, tricks etc, that a guy with Caalzaghe's experience has. Not to mention, Calzaghe is a great athlete himself, and is the second best boxer in the game next to Mayweather.
Really easy fight to predict, just watch how Calzaghe handles very fast and skilled fighters like Kessler and Roy Jones and watch Dawson vs. the busy but average Johnson and the really over the hill Tarver, the 2nd fight. Dawson has speed and skills but isn't an outstanding fighter, doesn't use his reach advantage very good, and doesn't respond good to pressure. Calzaghe can fight inside and outside, throws a million punches and Chad has enough defensive holes to get punished for his mistakes all night. Kessler is an outstanding fighter with almost no defensive holes and a very precise offense, yet Calzaghe took away everything from him, adjusted, picked him apart and outclassed/outpunched/outsped/outskilled/outsmarted out everything. Kessler barely lost a single round before and after in his entire career, but even in his most competitve 3 minutes, he struggled to get the judges nod, Joe was too busy. Dawson just never looked confident vs. Johnson who applies about 40% of Calzaghe's pressure, 25% of speed, 50% of punches. And he certainly didn't look P4P material vs. Tarver in the 2nd fight either. It's a clash of styles, and for Chad, Calzaghe is the worst: Joe cuts down the ring instantly, gets inside, uses his superior hand and footspeed, throws a million punches, mixes up what you guys call slap and power punches, finds the defensive holes, takes away the key weapons (Chad always depended on speed and reach advantage, he'd be at disadvantage here struggling on the inside) and makes you totally confused. The late Calzaghe with hand problems wins by wide UD, about 118-110.
If Calzaghe had fought him when he fought Hopkins it would have been Joe Wide UD. If he come back now, I'd have to favour Chad.
Probably Joe but it wouldn't surprise me at all if Chad took it...It would go to the scorecards and I believe itta be something like 7-5 for Joe...
not in same breath! cnt compare dawson who's done notin to calzaghe, as the man above sed dawson didnt like the workrate of johnson imagine calzaghe goin to work on him
Dawson seems like a decent enough fighter but every time I see him i kjeep wating for this remarkable fighter some of the guys on here talk about , seems to be an above average belt holder but nothing "special " Calzaghe to throw a bazillion punches and win a fairly wide UD
Calzaghe by UD. Calzaghe is far too active for Dawson to outscore him throwing a few punches a round as he does, Calzaghe will be there throwing punches in combinations, moving and so on. Just wrong for Dawson's style.
