I'm going to wait and see more. Ricky Hatton after getting nearly stopped by Collazo and then stopped by Mayweather, was getting jelly legged everytime a fighter landed a clean shot on him. Now thats a fighter who lost his punch resistance. The same goes with Fernando Vargas. After he got stopped by Tito, just about every fight win or lose, he was gettting rocked on unsteady legs everytime a fighter landed a clean shot. Until I see this from Dawson, I cant say he's lost his punch resistance.
It seems that after you drain yourself, your chin turns to glass. Just look at Roy Jones when he moved down to fight Tarver, and Dawson when he moved down to fight Ward.
I think it's too early to write Dawson off. He came out with a terrible game plan, I can understand wanting to be aggressive to get respect early in a fight but he just fought a stupid fight. He stood in range and threw a lazy jab and rightly got countered. We've seen him fight stupid fights before against Johnson and Pascal and then come back strong in his next fight, this time round he was in with a monster puncher and so the consequences for his lapse was much more dramatic. Dawson kind of reminds me of Tarver in terms of being inconsistent, on his day he's tough to beat and the top fighter at light heavyweight but is liable of being over confident and being lazy and get's beaten by guys who would be outclassed if he was 100% fit and 100% focused. You never really know which Dawson will show up, the one who struggled with Johnson, Pascal and Stevenson or the fighter who beat Adamek, Hopkins and Johnson in the rematch.
Dawson has been underachieving throughout his whole career, he couldn't give a **** about himself or his fans. How many times has it been next time he will do better, next time he will do better, it's like that with Dawson in almost every fight. This is the guy who went through 10 different trainers. I knew there was something wrong with him the day he fired Floyd Mayweather Sr two weeks before a scheduled fight, he hasn't been the same since. Why should I believe that he will recoup in a rematch, he just doesn't seem motivated to win anymore. And at the world class level you have to be at the top of your game, or you will lose.
You see my point then. It seems Dawson was not up for this fight. He didnt warm up for it even, perhaps thinking he'd get around to it after a couple rds. He seemed unmotivated once again. And if history tells us anything, it's very possible that the best of Chad Dawson is yet to be seen. He may very well be back and as good as ever.:think
...history? As in, Hopkins' career? Dawson's fire is gone, I'm afraid. Especially with no rematch clause in the Stevenson contract. :-( Wassup, Chitown. :hi:
I just dont think Chad thought much of Stevenson. Sometimes the guy just dont act like a pro fighter. It was obvious to me that he clearly underestimated the punching power of Stevenson. I think a couple fights vs guys like Allan Green would bring his confidence back up and he'd be motivated for a rematch with Stevenson and maybe even Ward at 175. Any news on if Bute is recovering well from his hand surgery????:think
Considering how Ward humiliated him, I can see Dawson being motivated to get back in the gym if Ward officially moves up. But I don't see that happening soon... and yeah, battering Allan Green would probably be a morale booster -- I'm just thinking Family Chad might retire instead of going back to square (-)1, not having a rematch clause with the relatively unknown guy who smoked him in 1. No word on Bute, it's wind & tumbleweeds. Not like it used to be i.e. two articles a week... Bute never was a lion in boxing, it's hard for him to get motivated to lace 'em up - maybe even harder than it is for Dawson.
Dawson's entire career is based off being dry, that's all you need to know right there. As a hardcore fan of the sport who respects all styles and all fighters as I know how difficult it is to make it far in a deadly sport like this I can openly say that Dawson, alongside Mathew Hatton, is/are the only fighters I despise watching with passion. I will never understand how anyone could appreciate Dawson's style of activity for 30 seconds per rounds and pulling off. Remember when he had Pascal rocked/hurt badly late(10th round?) from an uppercut only to back off and take the round off? Remember when he had Tarver stunned numerous times only to do absolutely nothing? It's one thing to fight smart but to be a disease to the audience and yourself is another. I hope he seeks retirement, so far he had two knockouts in a row and both were brutal.
I believe Dawson will be back, maybe not this year though. Everything that's been said about his motivational problems is true and has been dragging for some years already. Seriouslly? no rematch clause in the contract? I've having a hard time believing as it's a standard procedure for a voluntary defense these days.
He won't be allowed to fight this year anyway. After a knockout like that he has to take 6 months off.
Dawson is usually at his best after a bad fight. i think he may have come into this fight cold so he would have more down the stretch. big mistakes considering Stevens power early on. i like Dawson. but like Bute he has unfortunately taken a beating of his own accord.
