Fighting on the undercard against Jovo Pudar who weighed in at 227 lbs. I remember him looking gassed at 232 against Walker in an 8 rounder. I know nothing nothing of this Pudar fella. Judging by his record his seems durable considering he took a prime undefeated Peter the distance and as this is over 12 could he cause an upset against a out of shape Chag. I'm going to watch a couple of his recent fights to see if he has a hint of ability. Do any of the more intelligent posters (you know who you are) think it's worth putting a bit on this guy to outpoint Chagaev over 12?
Well, Pudar certainly has the more respectable BMI (a "slightly overweight" 27.5 to Chagaev's morbidly obese 35...yes I'm an extreme nerd ) ...but he is still getting schooled. By a slow and rather sluggish teacher who can barely remember to hit all the bullet points of their syllabus before the bell, but schooled nonetheless.
Definitely a more interesting fight than it seemed before, given how fat Chagaev is. But Chagaev is still the big favorite and like wins on power and handspeed.
haha i misread the title and thought it said chavez jr...lol...i was like omg this guy just keeps gaining weight lol
If the gulf in talent is this big, it doesn't matter how big the favorite's gut swells up. The result usually still winds up exactly like it was supposed to. Case in point: Tua over Chasteen weighing 252, Charr over Saglam at 262 (though he was fortunate Saglam overexerted and injured himself), Arreola over Minto at 263, Solis over Barrett at 271, Rahman over Brown at 284, etc.... ...and that is just recent examples off the cuff of top heavies coming in at scale-tipping career highs with horrid looking physiques and still taking care of business.
Chagaev was very good in his prime. Ruslan was a world amateur champion in 2001, defeated Valuev more clearly than Haye did, also Ruiz, Virchis, and the ATG amateur Cuban Felix Savon at age 17 in 1997. But Ruslan is faded and fat now. I hope Pudar beats him, because I'm disgusted with Chagaev for letting his career go down the tubes by becoming obese.
I agree with all that (at least, the opinion parts, since the facts are facts ) - even the last bit though I always wanted to see him make a comeback. Problem is, he didn't. :-(
Prime Chagaev was much better than Povetkin and many others at his time. He is getting old now, cant expect miracles from him given his size...
this guy is still fighting? poor Ruslan, he was very good in his prime, only man who beat SNV convincingly
we should of had Chagaev-Holyfield to determine the winner of the WBA "Sugar Valuev Conqueror" belt :yep
Very disappointing. I thought I seen Chagaev training at the Kronk within the last year looking in decent shape with no fight lined up. What's his problem?
