Klitschko-Chagaev: Ruslan Chagaev Ready For Wladimir Klitschko

This Saturday over 60.000 fans in the Arena auf Schalke and millions of people on RTL will be watching the highly anticipated fight of the heavyweight

Klitschko (IBF,) met for the first time at the Press Conference in Gelsenkirchen. Universum-Promoter Klaus-Peter Kohl, who flew in with Chagaev and his team to Gelsenkirchen, stated on the podium: „We have applied for a Special Request with the WBA, that Ruslan will be defending his WBA title and it will be a unification bout. The opposition will have time until Wednesday to comment on that case. We will be awaiting a decision by the WBA until than. We haven't heard anything official yet and we are remain calm. For us it is clear and that will remain so that Ruslan Chagaev is the only and full WBA world champion. This was shown in the split of the purse for the cancelled fight against Valuev in Helsinki. Ruslan would have received 55 percent and Valuev 45 percent but everyone can form their own opionion about this.“

WBA world champion Ruslan Chagaev: „It has always been a big dream to fight auf Schalke. Now it becomes reality.. I have met the football team of Schalke 04 previous to my fight in 2008 against Matt Skelton. I gave them a

lession together with my trainer Michael Timm. They were very nice. In general the people here are very kind and honest. I'm so excited about the fight. The size difference to Wladimir doesn't bother me. I have prepared myself to Valuev who is also tall and heavy. I'm expecting to fight for 12 rounds. It is in god's hands what going to happen on Saturday. I don't want to say much as I want to let my hands speak in the ring.“

Wladimir Klitschko praised the Universum world champion. „He is the best opponent you could have asked for. Ruslan is the ideal solution after the cancellation of David Haye. He is the third best after my brother Vitali and myself. He holds the WBA belt. He is the true world champion as he has defeated Nikolai Valuev.“

Chagaev-Trainer Michael Timm: „We didn't come here to be just the stand-in. We want to win the fight on Saturday. That's obvious. Ruslan has got it in him. We have worked so hard for this. Ruslan has continiously trained after Helsinki and we are so happy about this chance. A thank you to Wladimir, that he is facing us. Everything can turn out to be positive now.“

Can't wait. What a stroke of luck that such a quality, undefeated, and titleholding opponent was also needing a fight at the same time Haye was hurt....................Amazing luck........This is going to be a great fight.

To me, it will be the true champion crowned.

Vitali beat a guy that Wladdy beat years ago, and as much as I appreciate having him back, that does not make him the champ except in this strange alphabet universe of modern era boxing..
    Chag beat Valuev- enough said.

Between Wlad and Chag, they have defeated Byrd, Brewster, Sultan,,Peter, Valuev, and Ruiz.

    This IS the championship.

Awesome, Chagaev is no joke, Wladimir didn't take an easy replacement and I'm actually shocked they took Chagaev. This shows you that Wladimir is here to fight all.

    Couldn't put it better :thumbsup

I can't believe there's people who actually aren't looking forward to seeing it happen. It seems like they want to be able to keep bitching about the state of the Heavyweight division and don't really want things to improve, because this is a fight that needed to happen. And there's no excuses attached- both fighters will be ready and in shape for Saturday. It couldn't have gone this well if they'd each planned to fight each other from the start.

    On paper. Yes.
The reality is that Wlad will annihilate Chagaev. He has no chance whatsoever. None.

It just reminds me of all the people saying how important the Wlad /Iggy fight was because it was the first unification fight the division has seen since 99. The truth is,the fight took place in early 08, and the fight did nothing to increase the popularity of the division or made Wlad any more great. The fight itself more and likely lost some mainstream fans that watched it that night, and the fans at the arena gave Wlad a standing Boovation for his uneventful preformance.

So to me this fight is better than Wlads last two lame oppenents, but it's clearly no Frazier/Ali or Bowe/Holyfield as some Wlad supporters like to make it out to be. I hope the fight is exciting, but I certainly have my doubts.

I'm looking foward to this on Saturday night.

You would probably pick a decent win on points for Wlad, but I wonder if Chagaev can outbox and outsmart Wlad in the earlier rounds.

This is the highest fight that is makable today in the division. Chagaev is in his prime, un-defeated and proven with a 3-0 record over top ten ring ranked heavyweights.

Any boxing fan will tell you that unifying belts in a divison enhances a fighters Legacy.

While Chagaev is not as popular as Tyson is, he certainly will offer more than the Tyson who fought Lennox Lewis.

Also, it takes two fighters to make a boring fight. Wlad's huge size, great hand speed, accuray & power have a way of making the other guy gun shy. In the end, Wlad delivers a very high stoppage rate.

I wont argue that the fight is more note worthy than say a bout against Austin or Rahman, but half the people on ESB cant be bothered watching it, what makes you think mainstream fans will be paying attention on saturday?

We dont even know if the WBA will even be on the line or not, and if it isn't, whats Wlad even getting from winning this match? The majority of boxing fans still think his brother Vitali would kick his ass, so there's still a question mark, not only in my mind, but several boxing fans who still dont know who the best in the division truly is.

I think this is actually going to be a very competitive fight. Similar to Lewis vs Mercer. I just have a feeling that Chagaev isn't going to go away easy in this fight and might actually have Wlad in trouble a couple of times. However, if Wladimir sticks to hit and run tactics and manages to catch Chagaev lunging in, this ends in a brutal KO.

That's exactly what I see happening. Probably very early as well
