Due to the Wlad-Chagaev fight, I was wondering if Chagaev is the best man Wlad has ever been in the ring with. Sanders is the best he's faced so far imo, and I want to know how you guys think a Chagaev-Sanders fight would go.

This will be the Sanders that stopped Wlad and Chagaev fighting at a level relatively close to how he was against Ruiz/Valuev with his injuries/illness/inactivity not too much of a hindrance.

Also feel free to say if you think someone else on Wlads record would beat Chagaev :good

I don't think Corrie Sanders is a better fighter than Lamon Brewster for the record. As for who is better between Chagaev and Sanders, well I'll say that Chagaev is the much better career fighter, but doesn't have the ability to harm Wlad the way that Sanders did. The power and handspeed are simply on two very different levels. Ruslan does have better stamina, boxing skills, workrate, and wins over better comp....

That's about the best I can do...

Brewster was a good fighter, he may have been able to outlast Sanders and finish him late, but that's the way their strengths and weaknesses match up. I think Sanders is better against most opponents than Brewster is and short of gassing late would beat him.

I totally agree with the rest of your post except one minor gripe. Sanders was a much more explosive and dangerous puncher than Chagaev is definitely, but his handspeed isn't on a different level. Ruslans handspeed is maybe his best asset, he has a very quick hands but it's decieving because of his build.

No Way! Sanders was an unrated journeyman at the time. In fact up until the wladimir fight, he had never even been rated in the top 10 or beat someone in the top 10. Sanders is perhaps the 2nd most overrated heavyweight of the modern era. Sanders was nothing more than a one hit wonder journeyman. Sanders had horrible boxing technique, he was a 3 round fighter at best, he had a poor chin, and pitiful stamina. The first time he ever stepped up to face a world class fighter, he lost to Hasim Rahman.

I would say Chris Byrd, Hasim Rahman, Calvin Brock, Sultan Ibragimov, Lamon Brewster, are all better and more proven top 10 fighters! I could even add a couple more on to that list.

Sanders power and speed is vastly overrated. It didnt do him any good vs Hasim Rahman, Nate Tubbs, or Vitali Klitschko. Outside of Wlad, what top 10 world class figthers did Sanders unleash his "freak of nature like handspeed and power" on????

"Outside of Wlad" is a pretty narrow view to take.

Wlad has never lost a fight in which he hadn't lost by exhaustion. He's a big, strong, fast fighter who is arguably the top fighter of the era and Sanders demolished him.

For someone who gives Wlad a lot of credit, you should acknowledge Sanders KO over him more imo.

I personally would have picked Brewster to beat Sanders in a head to head match, what's more I'm not sure what your reason is for thinking that Sanders is better against most opponents than Brewster.. Lamon clearly fought a better list of men, and wasn't beaten as badly by lesser opponents.

I will also ad that Suzie Q has a good point about men like Chris Byrd and Hasim Rahman being better fighters as well. Not sure that I agree with him about Brock or Ibragimov, but I think the point is pretty clear - Sanders was NOT the best man to face Wladimir Klitschko...

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I rank Sanders above Byrd, Brewster etc. On the contrary there are several fighters Wlad has beaten that rank above Sanders.

But I'm talking purely head to head here and who would win in an actual fight. Not who has the better wins, and ranks highest.

I can understand picking Brewster over Sanders, but Brock and Ibragimov is stretching it.

Ruslan does have pretty good handspeed...but he generates it from a smaller frame then Corrie did.

Let me clearify that BROCK and IBRAGIMOV were NOT MY picks.

As for head to head abilities, I would still pick Byrd, Rahman and Brewster over Sanders against most top flight heavyweights... Rahman defeated both Lennox Lewis AND Corrie Sanders. 'Nuff said. Byrd beat Golata, Vitali, and Tua. In addition to also beating a number of better contenders than Sanders did, Brewster defeated Wladimir Klitschko when Emanuel Steward was IN HIS CORNER - something that Sanders did not do.. Hell, I still don't know who I'd credit as being Sanders second best win... Bobby Cyz Maybe????

The Rahman that took out Lennox and Sanders is NOT the same one that lost to Wlad. That Rahman was on his way to getting knocked out by James Toney, AND was seriously hurt by Zuri Lawrence of all people shows how incredibly spent he was at that stage in his career. Sanders would of destroyed that version of Rahman inside of 2 rounds.

Byrd is a different story, he is Wlad's best win and a good fighter. How do you see a fight between prime Byrd and Chagaev playing out?

Anyway, my initial idea with this thread wasn't to get into a big debate about Corrie Sanders, it was more intended to gauge Chagaev and how he'd fare against the best men Wlad has faced.

And what was Sanders when he fought Wlad? 37 years old, only fighting on average once per year, long history of injuries, no world beaters on his record to speak of, and often had the preference to play golf over training?
Perhaps, but I'd really have to see it to believe it.

    Okay now we agree.

Probably a crowd disappointing fight with little action and a lot of fast, soft punches thrown. Although Ruslan has never lost, I am inclined to thinking that Chris might pull out a decision.

i think he might do fairly well against most of Wlad's top flight opponents, but I don't think he beats all of them nor looking very impressive for that matter. He is for the most part, an indecisive winner when it comes to facing ranked opponents.

Brock and Ibragimov were UNDEFEATED top rated mandatories, both in the RING top 10. Certainly far more accomplished than sanders.

Chagaev soundly defeats Sanders, head-to-head. He has an iron chin and excellent upper body movement/defence that will see him through the first rounds. After that he'll start coming on and somewhere during the middle rounds, i think the South African folds. He also has loses his southpaw advantage because Ruslan is one as well.
