Despite his age, Matt Skelton is a tough cookie who knows how to win. He holds and pushes on his opponents to tire them out. Chagaev has managed to defeat a very similar fighter, John Ruiz, but Skelton won't be an easy opponent.

Most people don't like his boring Ruiz-like fighting style, but Skelton deserves a title shot as much as any other heavyweights currently ranked by the WBA.

Skelton is ridiculously crude and very old, I dont fancy his chances here one bit. It doesn't say much for Ruslan's ambition that he's taken this fight instead of a unification bout.

Poor old Tony Thompson gets ****ed again

Wait a minute - i just noticed that Thompson is only ranked by the WBO (#2) and not even ranked in the top 15 by the other three bodies. How the hell does that happen?

Skelton makes John Ruiz look like Pernell Whitaker. His style barely qualifies as 'boxing', and if he wins he'll officially become the worst fighter to win the heavyweight championship ever. Which, in fairness, would be a hell of an achievement..

As soon as someone wins an eliminator (like Thompson did against Krasniqi) the other bodies take him off their rankings.

The only way “ Sugar Ray “ Skelton beats Ruslan is if he's got diabetes. I too am disappointed with the opponent. But Chagaev has already beaten three other top ten WBA fighters in Ruiz, Valuev, and Virchis. Some of the top ten WBA ranking are horse ****. Mike Morrer, Tarus Bidenko, and D. Williamson are in there WBA top ten. I think Skelton is better than those guys.

Skelton is the type who will hang in there and give the fans their monies worth. The onus is on Chagaev to win the bout the way a champion should.

Here is my breakdown of this and why I think this is actually a good thing.

I´d rather see champions being active, even if it does mean taking on softer touches every three fights or so. This is just a stay busy fight and it´s happening next month.

Granted Skelton is a pretty lousy challenger, but compared to many title challengers over the last year, like TOS, Beck, Austin, Okhello, Meehan, Barrett and Danny Williams (who Skelton beat) he doesn´t look all that bad. Skelton is ranked #9 on boxrec, has 21 wins and only one loss in his career, has been the British champion but has never gotten a title shot before.

If you look at the ratings you will also see how most other top fighters are already busy. In the top 10 on boxrec, only Ruiz is available and they´ve already fought. Below that, available fighters are: Alexander Dimitrenko, Rahman, Brewster, Brock, Sprott, Arreola and Danny Williams.

Out of these Dimitrenko and Brock fought recently and would hardly be available in January. Skelton already beat Williams and Sprott. Brewster may not even box again. Arreola has fought nobody of note. Rahman is hardly that much better than Sprott, just a much bigger name.

    :hi:
