I have heard people upset that Vlad has chosen Chagaev but I consider Chageav the third best HW out there after the Klits. He had a good amatuer career and based on the tapes of him he is very skilled. He also has a good chin unlike Haye. Haye was knocked out by an old, shot, Cruiserweight in Carl Thompson and Haye was knocked down by heavys like barret who dont even hit hard, just imagine how bad Vlad would hurt him if Barett could. Chageav is miles better then Haye and this is a much better fight then Vlad vs Haye.
Yes it is a much better fight for the HW division. No.1 v No.3 with the RIng belt on the line. A few inaccuracies with your post, Haye was not KO'd by Thompson. He gassed and was stopped on his feet (well his corner threw the towel in). Barrett didn't really hurt Haye, it was a legit KD imo and should have counted but he didn't seriously hurt Haye.
Chagaev used to be a better fighter, but the last 2 years really set him back in the skills department. To the point where I can come up with at least 5 Heavyweights I would feel confident enough to say would beat him in the ring, and another 5 I would say are 50/50. You must remember, even a prime Chagaev never really dominated anyone of top caliber. All of his big name wins were either by SD or MD, like against Ruiz, Virchis, and Valuev. I just dont see how he will do anything to derail Wlad from doing what normally does in the ring. He's not aggressive enough to give Wlad any trouble.
I haven't seen Chagaev-Virchis but the Ruiz and Valuev fights were bull**** decisions. Should have been clear UD's for Ruslan. Ruslan's lack of activity worries me in the lead up to this fight. He had a lot of ring rust in the Drummond fight and was nowhere near his best.
I know your going to laugh, but I went on record to say that Chagaev/Valuev was a very exciting fight to watch IMO. It wasn't even suppose to be on TV, but lucky for me I was fliping through channels and seen the fight on ESPN 2 right before it started. As far as the fight is concerned, I thought it was pretty close, but I had Chagaev winning by a round or two. It was a very tactical fight, that displayed Chagaev's ability to get on the inside and get back out of danger when he had to. But that fight was over 2 years ago, alot has changed since then.
Agreed, I'm still surprised this fight is actually going to happen. I wish it would of happend 2 years ago, but better late than never. I seen you like 3-6 mafia, have you ever heard Lord Infamous? He was one hell of a rapper, he's a very underrated underground legend.
Chagaev, a very technically skilled and smart boxer with a fast rising and promising career. Now, 2 years later and all we really have are questions... Is he rusty? Is he still dedicated? Still in shape? Has he lost his desire? How has he held up since he won the belt?
Thats exactly why I cant say for sure whats going to happen come fight night. Chagaev has quietly came back into the spotlight, and Wlad is taking a big chance with this guy. Yes, Haye is more powerful with faster hands. Though Chagaev is dangerous in his own right, he's a southpaw with a good left hook. He also has been on the big stage before, and has came out on top everytime. So unlike Rahman and Thompson, there could be some real danger for Wlad come fight night.
Haye wasn't KO'd, it was TKO with the corner throwing in the towel. And you might describe Carl Thompson as an 'old, shot, cruiserweight' but you fail to mention that 'old, shot, crusierweight' was an absolute Grade 'A' warrior with an iron chin, a tonne of experience and a lot of heart. Also, it works both ways. Wlad was essentially out on his feet from a Lamon Brewster jab. Not exactly iron chinned is he? One last thing, as Ishy said, probablly a legitmate KD, but at no point was Haye 'hurt', against Barrett, you make it sound like he was struggling to beat the count or something. I agree with the sentiment of your original post, Chageav is a better HW, or at least a more proven HW, than Haye. But none of the things you used to make that point have much credibility, IMO. I mean, its a 'much better fight' in the context of historical significance of giving us a true HW champ, but in terms of excitement and entertainment and buzz, Haye-Wlad would have been far superior and more in demand.
The allure of the Haye fight is that there's a belief that Haye can stop the fight with one punch. The odds would certainly favor Klitschko, but if the possibility is there that Haye can win then it's a compelling and worthwhile fight. Chagaev may technically be a better fighter and he may be a 'champion in recess', but the fight itself sucks. If your only interest is in the advancement of Klitchko's career then of course you're happy about this fight, but if you want to see Wladimir challenged then it's a disappointment. To make it worse, it's not even clear how this will resolve the title situation - will Valuev still be the WBA champion? Will Wladimir be forced to fight him to be the actual champion? The situation would have been clearer if Wladimir just fought Haye and Valuev and Chagaev took care of their business - then we could move on from there. That we're even in this situation is fishy, but I guess **** happens.
