If Floyd had being the champion in Louis s era ,which of Joe s title challengers would have being most likely to rip the title from him ?
Der Max, or Sharkey if he really was on. Conn would have been interesting for a points type close fight.
The Sharkey who fought Louis wasn't a challenger and he was just a shell.Like wise the Schmeling that Louis took out was a bit past his best.
I'd love to have seen a closer-to-prime version of Ezzard or Jersey Joe vs. Floyd. Not going to make a call there, at the moment, at least. And I'll not lie, I'd also have loved to have seen Patterson light up Two Ton Tony for a few rounds, mismatch that it would have been.
That's true .The only one of the champs after Tunney retired to challenge Joe was Schmeling, and like u say ,wasn't a challenge in any shape or form .Floyd duplicate s Louis IMO for a 1 round ko .
I don’t think schmeling was much past it in 38....he had the best run of his career from August 1934-june 1938 knocking out hamas, Neusal, Thomas and decisioning Uzcudun...A year after losing to Louis, he still won the European Hw title by knocking out heuser in 1 round.
B Baer because of his size and punching power. Damato was afraid to throw Floyd in the ring with large fighters who could punch. I have an exact quote from damato “Floyd when you’re ready to take on bigger challenges at heavyweight, I will let you know..but never against a large fighter like bob baker.” Damato to Patterson in 1955 Also B Conn, Walcott, Schmeling all had good chances of beatinf patterson. Floyd was a great fighter with an incredible blend of handspeed and power, but those 3 were ATG fighters I favor Floyd over anyone else
Good picks. Walcott I've always thought would be extremely difficult for Floyd. His style coupled with decent power ,throwing shots from the blue ,could see him putting Floyd down .Conn of course gave Joe fits in the first match, he'd prove elusive .He'd make Patterson work ,it would be a case of Floyd catching him up to be able to hurt him enough .Godoy I've thought would prove awkward ,maybe giving Floyd trouble until he starts to nail him .Even Farr may prove a tough nut to crack ,if Joe couldn't ko him maybe Floyd has to go the distance.
Louis hurt his hand early in the Farr fight this undoubtedly hampered him. Prime Farr was pretty durable.
Yep ,I actually imagine as Tommy being one of the challenger's that stands up to some of Floyd s Best shots. I don't see him for example suffering a Cooper type ko loss to Floyd. Though it must be said Patterson had the faster hands than Joe so he'd be doing damage to Farr's face along the way .I reckon a brave performance from the welsh man but maybe to be honest a late rounds stoppage ,perhaps on cut's.
I can't see Max ,as good as he was in prime lasting long with a pre Liston Patterson .Floyd would jump on max literally as soon as the bell goes, he'd be hurt and in trouble fast .
D'Amato never let Floyd fight anyone while he held the title .. it was a disgrace to the game. His title contenders were the most pathetic in the history of the heavyweight division ( M of Q / Janitor, ) ... his end did not justify his means despite what some archivists try and claim. That being said Tommy Farr might have been tough, Schmeling for sure, Conn for sure, Walcott for sure, Buddy Baer might have been a tough match up too ..
