Its kind of weird, I find that my smoking makes no difference to my cardio, I can still put in the same times and distances when smoke as when i dont smoke, i guess some peoples body's just process it differently

Never saw Jake outta the ring (even at the beach) without a thick stogie stuffed in the side of his mouth. He even managed to convince film directors to let him use it as a prop for the few heavies he played in B-pictures.

    Interesting to think about this.

Up until, say, the early 70's, at most fights there were so many people in the AUDIENCE smoking that the ring was usually covered in a smokey haze.
I always wondered how any fighter could go 15 hard rounds in that garbage.

So, maybe smoking actually gave you an edge back then.

My theory is that because smoking constricts the blood flow to muscles, doing it long enough and training through it could actually train your body to use the blood flow it gets more efficiently, resulting in greater stamina. That could help explain the insane conditioning the old timers had despite being at least fairly heavy smokers. Just a random theory on my part, but it's something I always found weird.

Someone who was a non-smoker would most certainly be at a disadvantage in a fight hall like you described...I know my conditioning goes to **** if I'm working out somewhere and people are smoking.

Recently i managed to get a chance to see china's national boxing team train in beijing. When training was over, just about every one on the team had a cigarette break, and claimed they enjoy drinking a chinese version of vodka to relax at night. I was shocked and they said you go watch other atheletes in the olympic training center from swimmers, divers, to gymnast they will all take a cigarette break. Sure enough they were right.

Michael Phelps is probably the perfect answer to this. And the likes of usain bolt ended up staying awake till about 3 eating chicken nuggets in the Olympic village at the bejing games. Mind bogging to think they can still regularly break world records despite these setbacks
