Bob Fitzsimmons before the first Jeffries fight.

Jess Willard before the Dempsey Fight.

Sonny Liston before the first Ali fight.

Of course all of the above got what was coming to them.

    Name and shame some more.

Kid McCoy was perpetually drunk, yes?

Before anyone mentioned Greb, him doing that was a self perpetuated rumor by Greb and the people close to him to throw people off from what I know.

This is true from what I can gather.

Bobby Dobbs actualy paid a sparring partner to impersonate him and go boozing round the local bars before some of his fights to throw oponents off focus.

Nice work if you can get it.

    Hah.

Reminds me of McCoy using make-up to make himself look pale and then acting frail the day before a fight, all the while betting on himself to win.

Some think this is an old wives tale.

McGrain will probably tell you better.

There is a story that Burley was at the booze, Moore repeated it as though it were true and so does Blackie Nelson, so there may be something in it.

A question i've often wanted answered is, why wasn't this a title match? Burley was the Calafornia state MW champ at the time of the fight, and Moore certainly qualified having fought out of Calafornia for at least a year...should have been a title fight! But I don't think Burley defended it again until the Chase rematch.

Chase may be abit overated in the patheon of Black Muderer's row fighters.

Lew Jenkins claimed to have had whiskey in his corner during his bouts after winning the title. He was a lush and probably the most obnoxious of them all:

I was never in shape in my life. Never in condition. I'd go out and run a little bit, sit down, smoke a cigarette, rest a while. I had bottles in my corner and everything else. People have to seen it to believe the way I fought. I had been drunk ever since I won the title just about...

............Raging B()ll told me a story once about one of my favorites, the now late Mando Ramos, who passed away just last week (rest easy Mando, and thanks for all the great fights)........

Mando was a partier, to put it lightly. Before his fight with his good friend Sugar Ramos (great fight, BTW), Sugar was asked by a reporter how he saw the fight stacking up.

"I'll win it," Sugar said, "Mando isn't in condition."

    "Why's that?"

    "He's out every night partying."

The reporter chuckled "What makes you think that?"

"Hell," Sugar said, "I know he is; I was with him at the bar just last night."

    That guy was unreal.
