    were horrible when they started then suddenly bloomed into greatness. maybe a marciano?

    I would not consider any of them great, but Alan Minter, Eusebio Pedroza and Dennis Andries overcame ropey old periods in their careers to become respectable champions

    Mike Weaver, Kelvin Seabrooks, Billy Backus, Bonecrusher Smith at a certain level of fighter. But for greatness, even Tony Zale had his rough patch in the beginning of his career.

    As i recall Carlos Monzon was a bit of a mystery man outside Argentina, pre benvenuti, seen by many as big strong and awkward but nothing particularly special, but he certainly grew into an acknowledged great during the course of his championship reign.
