This thread is about heavyweight champions whose reputations rest on a single tremendous win. What I am asking you to do is evaluate where they would rank without that single win.

    Marvin Hart (looses Johnson win)

    Gene Tunney (looses Dempsey win's)

    Max Schmeling (looses Louis win)

    James Douglas (looses Tyson win)

Feel free to add other fighters including ones from diferent weight classes.

Tyson (losses Spinks win and lineage) Puts him back slightly.

Frazier (losses Ali win) Puts him back a great deal.

Seeing that many dispute the Johnson win I don´t think he would drop much.
Tunney would possibly drop out of any hw rating because the Dempsey wins are nearly all he did at hw.
Schmeling would still drop a bit to the level of Baer and Sharkey I think. He still has a good resume - the best out of those guys you mentioned here. Good enough to not deserve to be ranked here.
    Douglas would drop down wide.

In many that would be the least fair.

He was always going to get some kind of champion to give that FOTC performance against with impresive results.

The Moorer win would deserve note.

I don't disagree ,he had solid wins against Ellis ,Quarry ,and Bonavena,I just think the perception of him would change if he had lost all three fights to Ali,take away his one ATG win and it hurts his legacy ,because of how easily Foreman dismantled him,I think.

He shouldn't be in the HOF even with the win.

    Good thread, janitor.

There's a round robin collection of fighters in the 90's who live off of one another to varying degrees.

    Wright beat Mosley twice.

    Mosley beat Oscar twice.

    Forrest beat Mosley twice.

Without those wins each fighter is quite a bit poorer in my opinion.

Guess you could throw Mayorga in there as well, beating Forrest twice.

Tarver without both Jones wins amounts to a reasonable Lt Heavy but not a Stallone co-star.

McCall without Lewis ranks as a decent sparring partner for Tyson.

Corrie Sanders without Wlad Klitschko is just another hard punching chinny South African Heavyweight.Probably a step down from Pierre Coetzer actually.

    1. Marvin Hart--would anyone particularly even remember Hart. Would he have had any claim to the championship just by beating Root? I think Hart would just be another forgotten second-tier contender without the Johnson victory. He would not be in the top 100.

    2. Tunney is remembered as a great lightheavy without the fight with Dempsey. Most likely he wins the lightheavy championship rather than the heavyweight championship if that is his goal.

    3. Schmeling drops into the area of extremely mediocre champions. He has some impressive victories over second-tier fighters but no signature win over a champion at all. His win over Sharkey is on a foul in a fight he was clearly losing. His defenders will argue that he should have gotten a decision over Sharkey in the second fight. If he did, however, Sharkey is never champion at all. I would say Schmeling in this scenario probably ends up being ranked behind Carnera and Braddock, well outside the top 50.

    4. Johansson doesn't KO Patterson in their first fight. Ingo still has marquee wins over Machen and Cooper, and with a strong overall career record he is probably viewed as one of the better European champions and makes some top 100 lists, but I doubt is very many would consider him top 50.

    5. Douglas would not make many top 100 lists without the victory over Tyson.
