Didn't Bernard Hopkins learn boxing in prison? I think I read somewhere that he became the prison champ and his trainer in prison said to him that one day he will become a real boxing champ. These words were his motivation to achieve what he did.
art tucker clifford ettiene ron lyle sonny liston paul sykes i know a broke the law that you wanted champions but just finding prisoner boxers is fun enough. also hopkins learnt to box before prison but he was a junior. he grew up and kinda put it to one side...got in some trouble went into prison and found boxing as an escape.
Hopkins boxed as a kid in the amateurs, then went to a life of crime and didn't box for years. When he was in prison, he said he got the spark back for boxing when there was a boxing program in there.
These guys went to prison or juvenile prison before they became champions: Sonny Liston Mike Tyson Floyd Patterson Rocky Graziano Jake LaMotta (I think he was locked up with Rocky as a minor) Dwight Qawi These guys went to prison in the middle of their careers after they became champs: Mike Tyson Diego Corrales Steve Johnston Paul Spadafora These guys went to prison after their careers were over: Carlos Monzon Esteban Dejesus Wilfredo Gomez Michael Nunn Naseem Hamed Pernell Whitaker James Page Mike Tyson (probably again in a few years)
John l sullivan did a minor stint in the can ron lyle did years for armed robbery clifford ettine did a long spell and i believe he is back in there. Audley harrison did some time in a youth prison i met a guy when i was in prison who was brought up with him apparently he was a bit of a budding young crook when he was younger muggings the lot. I think that if a young guy does time say at 18 it could disipline him for the sport if he has the sense not to go back there but in general the best fighters have to avoid the place like the plague and the behavoir that would get you there.
I think Muhamad Ali did a couple of days for driving while disqualified. Max Schmeling also got a nominal prison sentence after the war for building something without planning permision.
I don't think so. The only thing I read of him getting in trouble with the law was his wife getting a restraining order because he damaged her car in an argument.
Qawi actually fought his 17th pro fight in Rahway prison (the prison he had been in) against James Scott.
