Was it Paul Williams with 4, whats happened to the sport, in the 80s-90s many champions were fighting 5times on average, in Ray Robinsons day it was 20times, in Harry Grebs 30-50. Now most are on 1-2 times a year atsch
I'd say Williams altough the Kolle fight is like it never happened. And yeah they don't fight as often os before, the money, the training, the laziness....**** happens.I'm nostalgic for the old days.
I agree that the guys should fight more, but its the evolution of the sport. Plus, like the williams-kolle thing, if guys fought more and had fights like that then people would complain about guys padding their records. They should fight at least three times a year, and when they do fight it should be somewhat meaningful.
i agree. one of the reasons there isn't so many fights is because nowadays nearly every championship or big fight is against a legitmate top 10 contender whereas back in the day when they'd fight 20+ times a year only 3-4 would be against top level competetion, they'd be beating up on bums on cross country tours half those fights. But the amount of fights a fighter engages in during a career has always gone up and down. Look back to jack dempsey and jack johnson and- between october 1909 and april 1915 Johnson only fought six times in almost 6 years. between december 1920 and september 1926 jack dempsey only fought 5 times. There's also lots of old all time greats with under 30 fights to their names.
edgar sosa is the wbc light flyweight champion he won the title beating brian viloria on the 14/4/2007 and has defended it 7 times since. 4 this year
The one thing I really liked about Steve Molitor was his willingness to fight and his activity. He fought around five times in the period of a year after winning the title. Unfortunately he failed at the top level.
Cristian Mijares at least equalled Williams by fighting 4 times. Navarro, Munoz, Sasukul, and Darchinyan.
Three main reasons: 1) A few promoters control all the big fights, which makes it more difficult to make the fights. 2) Less supply = more demand. Fighters make more money by fighting less and drawing bigger crowds when they do fight. 3) Tougher to make dates because of modern economics. Venues need to be scheduled far in advance, tv dates are limited and need to be scheudled far in advance, and there are just generally a lot more moving parts than there used to be in general.
Also those old time fighters all have brain disorders!! They fought WAAAY too much Boxers sit back and strategically pick fights by biggest payday- biggest resume builder- best belt options Boxers back in the day would fight 20 times a year but 17 would be bums... Not to mention they fought more than 12 rounds... All that brain damage... Ali isn't skippin around with his hands up anymore saying he is the greatest... But Floyd Mayweather has some serious loot and jives all over the place
Three times a year is what I would like to see. Barring injury of course. Once or twice a year just makes it seem like forever between fights, especially if one is a blowout, like Williams-Kolle.
